September 13th, 2003 AL CENTRAL In the Race White Sox (78-69) .531 - Twins (78-69) .531 - Royals (74-72) .507 3.5 Out of contention Indians (65-83) .439 13.5 Tigers (38-108) .260 39.5 Breakdown Best Hitting Team (AVG) Minnesota has a .278 team batting average which ranks 5th in the MLB. They get alot of runners on base to create many rbi opportunities, the key to their offense is base hits and base running since they don't have the luxury of power hitters in their lineup with the exception of Torii Hunter who has 24 home runs. Most Power (HR) The White Sox have 205 team home runs which ranks 4th in the MLB. Frank Thomas leads the pack with 40 home runs. The White Sox also have 5 players who have more than 20 home runs including: Thomas, Lee, Everett, Ordonez, and Valentin. Crede and Konerko may very well join that group. Best Baserunners (SB) The Royals use speed to their advantage. Kansas City's 103 SB this year ranks 4th in the MLB. The Royals are lead by Carlos Beltran who has 34 steals, not to mention 22 HR and a .300 batting average. Beltran is followed by the two middle infielders, Desi Relaford (19) and Angel Berroa (15). Most Productive (Runs, Total Bases, and RBI) The White Sox have a total of 708 runs and 685 RBI. Leading the way in runs is Magglio Ordonez who has 90 runs, followed by Carlos Lee with 88, and Frank Thomas with 79. Trading deadline aquisition Carl Everett has totaled 87 runs on the season and Roberto Alomar has 38 runs in 57 games with the White Sox. White Sox RBI leaders include: Carlos Lee (100), Frank Thomas (94), and Magglio Ordonez (89). Minnesota is very close to the White Sox in production. Kansas City has allowed more runs than they have totaled. Best Pitching (ERA) The White Sox have a 4.17 team ERA which is 3rd in the AL. Cy young Candidate Esteban Loaiza (19-7) has been untouchable most of the year and is followed by Bartolo Colon (13-12) and Mark Buehrle (12-13). Damaso Marte and Kelly Wunsch both earn sub 2 ERA's while Tom Gordon and Scott Sullivan have been stoppers in bases loaded situations. Best Closer (SV and ERA) Eddie Guardado was an All-Star this year, then again so was Kansas City's Mike MacDougal. But Guardado has had a big 2nd half and has also compiled a 2.95 ERA and 34 Saves. MacDougal has 27 (8 BS). Guardado has just blown 3 saves this year and is usually the at the top of his game in the ninth. The White Sox Tom Gordon and Damaso Marte usually are in a closer platoon type role, it's one or the other with the game on the line, but as for consistency, it's all Guardado. Bold Prediction White Sox 86-76 Minnesota 84-78 Kansas City 82-80 Explaination: I think the White Sox have the team most fit to be in the playoffs and they have the lineup and rotation to do it. I hope your bold prediction is right. Also, I think the Sox have the ability to be a good base stealing team but we dont try enough. For them to win 84 they have to finish 6-9 (6-6 against the Indians and Tigersif you think we will sweep them). The Sox can still win the division, but the Twins will win more than 84. You're right, but I just don't see anything good about the Twins. So I expect them to go under .500 the rest of the way just because they have another round with us, and they are losing to Detroit, maybe they'll stay cold.
