There aren't many examples. He's an enigma. His workload since 2008 has been off the charts, so that's the risk inherent in signing him. He's never had TJ surgery, and Bronson Arroyo is someone with a similar career arc who finally succumbed, but that doesn't mean Shields is guaranteed to break down, too.
