Tigers released outfielder Alex Sanchez.

Apparently, this is all about defense. Speed alone hasn't turned Sanchez into even an average center fielder. By releasing him now, the Tigers are able to avoid paying Sanchez most of the $1.3 million he was set to earn. They'll likely enter the season with Craig Monroe at center, but they could turn to Curtis Granderson by June or July. Sanchez won't be out of work for long, but he's unlikely to land another starting job unless the Pirates want him.

Updating an immediate report, the Associated Press reports the Detroit Tigers were frustrated with OF Alex Sanchez's defense, which assisted in the decision to release him. "We've had a chance to watch him this spring and his defense was just not up to the level we like," Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said. Sanchez had a non-guaranteed one-year, $1.35 million contract and will receive 30 days' termination pay, $221,311, instead of 45 days' termination pay, $331.967, which he would have received if he were released after Friday.

100 bucks says he winds up as the Astros starting CF'er.

Hurry up and grab Craig Monroe for your fantasy team while he's still available. He had a 1.000+ OPS in the second half last year.

If you're in League 3, ignore this.

i like sanchez for his speed, he should use it more! (first he needs a team tho)

He only like led the majors in bunt hits last year...and he played like half the year...not sure how much more you can use your speed then that.

If he stayed healthy he would have broken the record for most bunt hits in a season.

I knew it was something like that.

So yeah, to say he doesn't use his speed is pretty crazy. He was just banged up pretty good.
