I got interested in Gartrell because in my daily BA newsletter, he's been mentioned a few times. He was drafted in the 31st round in this year's draft from San Francisco, and Baseball America had this to say about him;

 

Stephen Gartrell has more tools and athletic ability than the average senior sign and is an above-average runner and thrower. He has power but a long swing that will need adjustments.

 

I think minorleaguebaseball.com have him mistaken for a Maurice Gartrell (or I don't know if his name is that or Stephen);

Last night he went 2 for 5 with 2 2B's. Currently he has splits of .275/.351/.392.

 

 

Traded to Atlanta for cash considerations on April 16, 2011.

His name is legally Maurice but goes by Stefan (middle name). BA had him listed as one of their top 50 college seniors so he's been on their radar for a while.

Gartrell's up at B-Ham now as many of you would already know. He finished up with splits of .308/.438/.449 down at Bristol.

 

5 games with the Barons hitting .200/.333/.267.

 

Looks to be a guy who won't hit for much power so far, but has good plate discipline. Had a 48/43 K/BB ratio in 214 AB's down at Bristol.

We never talk about Gartrell, I feel like he's been under the Soxtalk radar quite a bit. Does anyone here think he's going to be a MLBer someday? He seems to be fairly decent.

Gartrell is still hanging on in the org. Probably his last year with the team unless he has a breakout year.
