  1. Could someone please explain why a 4. ERA national league pitcher who walks a batter every other inning is so compelling?

Did we have one of those once- Todd Ritchie?

We need players for the bullpen or for the top of the rotation- not at the bottom.

  2. Remember folks, if Rowand keeps playing well, he has to play CF once Maggs comes back...which means Uribe has to play SS if Willie has to play 2B and Crede 3rd B, which leaves out Jose

To me, the most critical decision Kenny has to make between now and the trade deadline is does he have faith in Willie Harris to be >0.285 kind of guy (since he has slipped from his >0.300 status now) throughout the season, does he have faith that Rowand will be around 0.300 thorughout the season and does he have fait that Crede will rebound with a stellar second half like always?

If the answers to the above three questions are yes, then he has to trade Valentin since Uribe has to play.....or trade Rowand

Unless he feels Uribe wasa fluke and will never be the same as he has been in the first half

Except that we're really, really weak at LH hitting. We can't lose the one bat we have.

  3. His biggest strength is clearly against RH pitchers & even his weakness against LH is still top 3 or 4 on a team as strong as the Braves.

A team as strong as the braves??? They aren't strong this year and their prior strength has been largely in pitching. Further, if you count this year, 3 of his past 4 years have been below par, suggesting he may be getting worse. All this for only 13 mill per season- I'll pass.

Do we really need Ortiz? He's a 4.00 pitcher (in the NL) who walks a lot of batters.

  4. Your "average" pitcher won 21 games last year, was an all star and a Cy Young candidate.

I'd like a whole staff of "average" pitchers like Russ Ortiz!

On a team that won 100 games.

An ERA of 3.81 with an average of 1 walk every other inning. He's had only 2 seasons with an ERA below 4, and those were closer to 4 than to 3.5.

The worst team he pitched for won 86 games - the others won 97,90,95, 100 an 101 (full season).

    Pretty much the Ritchey credentials.

  5. Maybe we are going to do with Cotts what we did to Buehrle in 2000, keep him in the pen for a while, let him perfect his control and get used to the bigs.

    Just a thought.

A lot of teams break in young starters to be via the pen.

    The Sox usually don't.

But, I like the idea- gives the youngster a new experience before joining the starting 5.

  6. Since divisional play began, the Cubs have been in the post season playoffs 4 times....the Sox 3

The Sox have not won a post season series since 1917

The Cubs won one last year.

The Cubs have won 10 pennants since 1900

    The Sox have won 5

They both have won only 2 world series (The Sox having the dubious distinction of being the only team to ever throw one).

The Cubs all time record is 9667-9130 for a .515%

The Sox all time record is 8028-7878 for a .505%.

Sure seems to me the Cubs history may not be one of many championships,

but it CERTAINLY is MUCH better than the Sox.

So please, PLEASE have some idea what you are talking about before spewing your ignorant garbage out there for others to waste their time reading.

If you don't know what you are talking about, please keep your pie hole shut.

    all stats verified by www.baseball-reference.com

Maybe this will be the year that that dominant Cub franchise posts back to back winning season for, what, the first time since the 1950s?

As for pennants, now factor in how many times the Sox finished 2nd to the Yankees

  7. Ozzie himself refused to walk as a major league player

They trade for a player that refuses to walk.

So the idea is that they will work with him on plate patience, when it meant nothing to the manager when he was a player?

    I have my doubts.

  8. All broke to camp early with the pitchers. They had their physicals and are now conducting their own informal hitting drills. www.whitesox.com

They are really the key to the offense

If they can't get on base, no one to drive in

  9. Over on the WSI Forum at http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbullet...&threadid=29068

there is a thread starting with a questionnaire.  Two of the questions deal with who was your favorite White Sox managers and your least favorite.

Thus far, nobody has listed Gene Lamont as a manager that they liked and several have put him down as a manager that they disliked.

This is only the latest example of something that I've noticed for a long time:  The man who was the single most successful White Sox manager since Al Lopez (258-210 .551) is also a manager that hardly any Sox fans have anything nice to say about.

    Why is this?

Just because you win when you have an abundance of talent, does not mean you are a good manager.

    LaMont was a terrible manager

  10. Well, Otis who reported the rumor reported the A-Rod/Nomar/Maggs deal way before that came to surface, so I think that there is at least some talking going on.

I'd take the trade; you can then do one of a couple options

a.) trade Nomar right away for pitching.

    b.) sign Nomar long term.

    c.) trade Nomar midseason.

Either way, this trade would work out for the Sox.  Otis has also said that Epstein/Boston would have a hard time giving up Nixon, and that Damon could be in the works, instead of Trot.  I'd throw Rauch in the trade for Boston, he's had his time and hasn't come through.

Only a) makes sense- and that only if it is worked out prior to trading for him.

Re B) How can we, at $55 mill, afford a long term contract on a player making$10Mil+? It removes all flexibility. If we are going to do that, why not sign Maggs long-term?

Re c) it's obvious that mid-season trades don't provide the yield that they once did- you might get 1 prospect. Work this out now- don't put ourselves under the gun for later.

Some obp players would do wonders for the Sox O. We have sufficient power.

  11. I really think this arod deal is going to get done, but is the nomar for maggs trade still on the table, cause it doesn't seem thats for sure right now, but i'd love to see that happen then trade nomar for washburn, donnelly, and eckstein, then get randy wynn too, I really love that scenario, but it's just not going to happen anything us sox fans want just isn't going to happen, thats how life works.

I find it hard to believe that Boston would get A Rod, without having aplace all lined up to dump Nomar.

  12. With Magglio on payroll, this team is grasping for air financially. It's extremely sad but true.

And with Nomar on the payroll at 12 million we aren't gasping for air?

I have no problem trading maggs - but for Nomar? For what purpose?????

Don't you find it odd, that the Sox are never discussed in the incessant A-Rod discussion - without us taking Nomar, the Bosox don't take A-Rod. It's like, our part of the deal is a given and that makes me feel uneasy

Oh, and Juan G is not a hall of fame player - no way, no how

  13. I would prefer to turn Nomar into Washburn, Donnelly and Eckstein

and Valentin in Randy Wynn - dealing with the Angels would be okay, just no Troy Percival.

But, the bottom line should be, who do the dodgers (or whomever) want more - maggs or nomar.  If it is maggs, don't do the deal

I like the Randy Winn part of the deal.

But I'd prefer younger players on the other part

  14. Nothing; he drove in 140 runs.

    ?

Because the thump that ruined 2002 was not the injury he suffered in 2003 after he drove in 70 in 320 atbats.   Nobody likes nagging injuries but be thankful that he doesn't have Vladdy's disc or Nomar's wrist......

Why?  You're forgetting you're talking about one of the MOST prolific run-producers of his generation here, an absolutely deadly hitter when healthy.  If he was 37-38, I might understand, but at relatively young 34, he has another couple of years left in the tank.

Again, he is simply NOT the OBP kinda guy.   As I told Rex, lay off the Beane pipe.

    Sorry, got the year wrong.

IN 3 (edited) of the last 4 years, he has driven in 70 runs or less. Maybe it's all injuries - but he wouldn't be the first player to see his skills decline in his early 30s. It's a gamble - and again, FOR WHAT PURPOSE?

How are the Sox better for this deal?

Not the RedSox, not Gammons, not Epstein, not Selig, not A Rod -----> but the White Sox.

My gut tells me MLB is sticking its fingers into this and applying pressure as they want what many consider the game's best player in the big eastern market.
