Entering today Teel had been stolen on 5 times and the runner was successful 5x. Based on runner speed and the runner's jump, Statcast estimates an average catcher would have caught none of the 5 runners. Our pitchers...generally don't hold runners well. For completeness, in the larger sample last season, Teel was a touch below average although the more detailed metrics seem to indicate that was largely attributable the part of the plays handled by the middle infielders.

I can't really evaluate the pitching management decisions because I have no idea who is or isn't available out of the pen today. I've been really surprised at the lack of roster moves to get some fresh bodies in there.

Grichuk made me nervous going after that one

The Meidroth play wasn't bad, it was just a near miss. Most guys aren't getting a glove on it. I think he lost his footing during the throw but either way that's not a gimme. No excusing the Colson play afterwards though. A bad miss that any guy will have every once in a blue moon but it's been a lot of blue moons over the past week or so.

Those who were watching the Peacock feed around 2:30 ET will know that the field really wasn't playable at that point because the warning track was extremely wet and mushy. I don't know why it was, but it was. Steve said on the broadcast that the warning track was also the problem back in 2021.

For me it's not about why they couldn't dry off the warning track, it's about why they failed to let the interested parties know about it in time to prevent the teams from warming up too early.

Eisert is a hero and I think has a decent chance of being demoted after the game so we can get somebody fresh up here (would probably be Tyler Davis if I had to guess)

Romo on base twice in one game!

There is just never a time I want to see Romo hit and it feels like he's constantly coming up in important spots.

I don't really see a place on the team for Jacob when Mune comes back. But Jacob has impressed me and has nothing to hang his head about. We'll likely see him back at some point.

Venable says postgame that Seranthony pitched better than the boxscore looks, since ump stole a strikeout from him. On the other hand, I see Venable's actions: pulling Seranthony at the first opportunity even though failing to get an inning from him was disastrous for our pitcher usage. So, I think the postgame comments amount to a little bit of ass-kissing for Seranthony.

Liked what I heard from Vargas post-game. Basically: that's baseball, we don't like to lose but we think we should be winning games like this and probably will next time. Honestly of all the things going on, I tend to not want to make a mountain out of a molehill. For instance, I don't think Colson's defensive miscues are very meaningful in the sense that I'm not very worried about them continuing to happen. But I gotta say, I am very confused about the guys getting picked off. It's several different players, all of whom are otherwise pretty heady/smart players even if aggressive. Makes me think there's something going on at the coaching/organizational level that is getting them into trouble on the basepaths. If the team was generating a lot of stolen bases, then I'd shrug it off as the cost of doing business. But IDK what they are doing to keep getting caught on the wrong foot out there.

Well to be fair, I regard almost any starting pitcher whose value is tied to his longevity (Detmers with several years of team control) as something of a trap. Throwing resources at starting pitching is very much a win-now move even if what you're technically paying for is long-term upside; it's just very hard to forecast what you're getting from a pitcher in the long run because the health is so volatile. Detmers has already shown a lot of volatility in his past which is why he has surprisingly little service time given how long he's been around MLB. So if Detmers was in my organization I'd be excited to see what he can do and would expect him to pitch well for the foreseeable future. But I would not like the Sox trading premium talent to get him here when there's so much risk that you ultimately don't get much out of him. If the Angels want to try their luck with Christian Oppor or something, be my guest!

Detmers is a trap unless you're just giving them some fodder. Of course the Angels might be prone to getting fleeced so I'd give them a call and see what's up. May I interest you in this shiny Billy Carlson?

I don't see any point in buying in any serious way. This is a developmental year and you don't know your long-term holes, if any. If there's a long-term piece out there, sure check it out. If there's some marginal moves to be made, take a look. Especially if you can improve the big league club at only the cost of money.

Unless there's some behind the scenes character problem, you're not getting rid of Seranthony. You just have to hide him until he gets it together. Unfortunately, you are also hiding Hicks and the more guys you're hiding, the harder it is to hide them.

Annoying loss but it's just another coin flip game that the Sox lose. They've won a lot of those coinflips too. Just keep grinding it out and you'll come out ahead. I think the Sox have at least a marginal talent advantage over Cleveland but these two losses are tough not because they are losses so much as the fact the pitcher usage is making each subsequent game harder to win. Get some more of those well-hit balls to drop and you'll come out ahead without having to worry so much about the pitching.

I think the strategy that inning was to play for the most runs possible and accepting the risk of not scoring at all which might be preferable to stringing out the game into even more innings. Unfortunately Cleveland is hiding prime Billy Wagner in their bullpen somehow and the likes of Junior Perez are not exactly prime Frank Thomas
