Hall of Famer voters speak out about Clemens
Linnwood replied to Linnwood's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(Brian @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 11:54 PM) Than Pete Rose should be voted in for everything he did BEFORE gambling. Joe Jackson should be in based on what he did before the World Series. I have to agree... if Bonds and Clemes get voted in, people need to raise holy hell about Rose and Jackson not being admitted. -
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 05:27 PM) Pettitte fesses up: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/sports/AP-...-Admission.html Okay, so now two players named have confessed. Anyone still want to claim that it is just hearsay?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3155168 For what it is worth this other article on ESPN says they polled 90 HOF voters and got this: YES 32 (35.5%) NO 22 (24.4%) UNDECIDED 36 (40%)

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 07:14 PM) How long will people continue to buy into this myth. They aren't a Sox fan just because they have the hat on, odds are it's just worn for fashion purposes since the Sox hat is cool to be seen in, and that's true in almost all cases. It all started with Dr. Dre, I figure after 15 years people would realize a Sox hat is a fashion statement and not a statement of fandom, but I guess not. /pet peeve Yeah, I live in Alexandria, VA, and riding the DC Metro the two most common baseball hats are the Washington Nationals alternate with the interlocking "DC" and various White Sox hats. I get the impression neither really have all that much to do with baseball.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) Yeah, now he is. But what about the past 4-6 years? What affect on Bonds' career the last several years has this had? Imagine that this had come out 5 years ago about Clemens. You think he's still getting paid $20 million a season? Clemens has probably made close to $200 million in salary by using performance-enhancing drugs since 1997. Yeah, except the evidence was not there the past 4-6 years for Clemens. Yeah, there were rumors about Clemens, but all you had to do was look at Bonds and know there was something unnatural going on. As for affect on Bonds' career, do you think Clemens is more likely to get a new contract than Bonds is? Last time I checked the A's were still interested in Bonds. I'm sure Bonds made plenty of money of his performance-enhancing drugs. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 05:57 PM) Um this is proving the Bonds "apologists" right. When Bonds was indicted, it was as if he was convicted. When Clemens was fingered, its all "hearsay", "convicted felons testifying", etc etc. Thats the exact same s*** thats happening to Bonds, but back then no one was saying how its totally unreliable. They were treating him like a convict. Its funny to see all these reporters change their feelings now that the precious has been accused. I don't watch ESPN anymore, but I assume you are talking about them when you say "its all "hearsay", "convicted felons testifying", etc etc." ? I don't give a s*** what ESPN has to say, I hold Clemens in the same ill regard, and I've read nothing but people holding Clemens in the same category as Bonds. If the Bonds apologists (and they are apologists, no need for scare quotes) were right everyone would forgive Clemens. Don't lump all sports fans in with the knuckleheads in Bristol. We don't all worship the Red Sox/Yankees and we don't all say it is "hearsay" It isn't a race thing, and it never has been. It is a cheating thing.

QUOTE(Brian @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 10:51 AM) I actually think it is smart for a player not to comment on it. Clemens comments and it only fuels things. Gagne is being overlooked by fans and media compared to Clemens and Pettitte. If he is overlooked it is only because he is now in a small market. Brewers fans I know are pissed.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 11:17 AM) Well, to me, Barry Bonds comes out of this as a somewhat sympathetic figure. Barry has been stating over and over in the media that it is ridiculous that there is a relentless witch hunt into his activities, as well as a media crucification of his character and accomplishments. He's also implied that the reason for this is because he is African-American. Bonds has basically been dragged through mud for the past 4-5 years, while Clemens has been celebrated by the public, worshipped in the mainstream media, and paraded around by public opinion as some sort of mythical hero. I am not going to sit here and claim we should all feel sorry for Bonds, but at the same time, he's been the recipient of the majority of the fallout from the steroid scandal unil now. It's about time some of the blame, anger, disappointment, and hatred fell on other shoulders. Except Clemens is now in the same boat as Bonds. At least in my book. Aside from the schadenfreude, the best part of this is that Bond and his apologists can now shut the hell up about this being a racial thing. You can't play the race card if Clemens is equally reviled.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Dec 14, 2007 -> 02:23 AM) The Mitchell Report is the equivalent of an indictment, its not absolute proof, you dont get any chance to defend yourself. In the court of public opinion, it is more than enough proof.

Just because you weren't throwing faster doesn't mean you weren't taking HGH or other things.

I find it odd that there is zero mention of this on the White Sox website.

Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel posted this on their Brewers Blog: An hour later he deleted that post and put this up:

I'll have to go see them next season at the new Nats ballpark. I'm kinda shocked we didn't try to get Mackowiak back.

From MLB.tv

Oh goodie, the spin is starting already.

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 02:57 PM) I want the Mitchell Report in book form like Game of Shadows. All proceeds go to MLB drug testing. I agree. This needs to be bound and printed for historical record.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 02:56 PM) Currently, Sammy Hagar of Van Halen is on the list I'm seeing. Man, I knew he was juicing!

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 02:47 PM) Yeah, I was way off in predicting no notable names would be released. Even if a majority of the names are a bunch of scrubs and people we already know took steroids, Clemens alone will keep this in the spotlight for quite awhile. I'm dying to know how ESPN deals with this story. They'll probably say, "STEROIDS WERE WIDESPREAD, CLEMENS JUST DIDN'T USE THEM," or "HE'S STILL A HALL OF FAMER WITHOUT STEROIDS" You know this is going to be the spin. EVERYBODY WAS DOING IT! OH WELL! GOOD THING THOSE DAYS ARE PAST. WHO'S NOW!?

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 02:46 PM) Strange that Sheffield was willing to bare it all to Sports Illustrated, but then he clammed up when Mitchell came a knockin That is because Sheffield is a f***ing idiot. Just like he sat down with Costas, admitted that he did steroids, but then insisted they weren't really "steroids" because he didn't inject them "in his butt."

QUOTE(WCSox @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 02:37 PM) Please tell me that Sosa is named in there. Sosa is only mentioned on page 85, in the context that a letter was sent to his lawyer, but they got no response.

QUOTE(longshot7 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 02:34 PM) A trucker on CB? Sounded like Spanish language radio.

It wasn't just on ESPN. I'm watching on the MLB.tv thing, and I heard that too.
