  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 04:21 AM) These two stories made me cry at work: http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_...hope-plead.html http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_...-of-things.html the scope itself can only be so horrifying, and numbers are so impersonal. What little money I have has just been donated, I dont have much, and i dont know if it'll help, but my God!, what else do you do? I just have a hard time grasping this, a country was, swallowed up. And knowing how things are built in Brazil, knowing what it would look like here, it makes me sick. And brazil is 1,000,000x more qualified to deal with something like this. Ugh. Because Haiti was already such a disaster BEFORE the quake, not only did that result in so much higher a loss of life, but the consequences after will be so much worse. You now have a couple or three million people with, basically, no clean water supply, no shelter, and a food supply that will run out in a hurry. You have one airport with one long enough runway capable of handling these relief aircraft, so you have a serious supply bottleneck. Roads in Haiti between cities are not fit for normal trucking. Sanitation is near non-existent, in terms of sewers and other systems, in most of Haiti. The coming weeks and months will probably kill as many people as the original event did. Its staggering how bad this is going to be. I hope, really seriously hope, that I am wrong, and the world finds a way to get them back on their feet.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 07:52 AM) CSN reporting that the Padres are making a run at Jermaine Dye. I guess we should have signed him, then included him in an A-Gon trade.
  3. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 08:34 PM) Those two idiots, Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh should just shut up, how pathetic little men they are. Huh?
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) They are saying there could be as many people dead as were killed in the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004 http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/01/...uake/index.html My god. And however many died in the quake, a lot more will die in the coming weeks because they can't get clean water and food. Thankfully the weather down there isn't cold, so shelter isn't as immediate an issue, unless they get flooding rains.
  5. Random coolness - walking on the world's largest mirror.
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 01:49 PM) Did you see Punch Drunk Love? I enjoyed that one. No, didn't see that one. The only one where I could stand him was Wedding Singer. Even then, it was more tolerating than liking.
  7. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 12:42 PM) Had "Funny People" from Netflix for about a week. Eh movie. Didn't expect Sandler to be so unlikable. I've always found Sandler thoroughly unlikeable in basically everything.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 12:20 PM) I have to head back upstairs for work, but one other thing to keep in mind is that it's not just the location of the faults that matters for earthquake damage, but it's also the kind of land on which things are built. Steep slopes can give way in slides, for example, so topography could be useful. Areas built on recent alluvial fill without a deep foundation can be particularly vulnerable because those areas tend to liquefy during shaking. Just from a basic search, here's an older overview geologic map. The stuff that might be particularly vulnerable is recent alluvium, especially alongside water. Port-au-prince appears to be built entirely on that. The area of this village is on top if a long ridge, above (south of) Jeremie, out on the SW penninsula. Looks like the bedrock is either eocone rock, or oceanic basalts. Nothing that would be at risk for liquification. But, being on a ridge top, a good shake might cause some parts of the ridge (which is quite steep in places) to slough or sheer off. No worries on flooding at least. Thanks for that as well.
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 11:30 AM) Both Jerry and Ozzie have said this wont happen. Forget about it. Actually, Jerry said it could, and Ozzie has hemmed and hawed on the DH thing. Neither of them, nor KW, has said it won't happen.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 11:26 AM) That's just it, the 2005 team didn't pitch to their averages either. They pitched way better than them. Yeah, that's why I'm saying, its a huge stretch to say the 2010 staff is better than what 2005 produced. Its possible, but not likely.
  11. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 11:15 AM) The team is more like the 2005 team but with better pitching all around. Everyone except Pierre and AJ can easily hit 20-30 HR. Pierre: 1 HR Beckham: 25 HR Quentin: 40 HR Konerko: 30 HR AJ: 15 HR Rios: 25 HR Missile: 20 HR Teahen: 20 HR Bench: 30 HR Is this not realistic? Around 200 HRs of the balanced variety. 20 From Jones and another 10 between Nix, Kotsay and Castro. Maybe we could use another player but I'm ok with this. I still wish we had another good outfielder. The only difference from 2005 is that this pitching staff only has to pitch up to its ability, not out their asses like 2005. I like the 2010 pitching staff, but to say this team has "better pitching all around" is a huge stretch. If they all pitch up to career averages, they still won't be as good as the 2005 team.
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 10:26 AM) The manual shows exactly where it would be if I had the next level audio package. Nothing. Just called Best Buy. They said they could add a wired FM Transmitter connected to the car's antenna which would allow for a line-in. $100 installed. Transmitters are terrible, though, in my experience, especially in crowded urban areas. Lots of background noise. Car radios are built to be replaced easily. Crutchfield is a great site for this - you can tell it your car model and year, and it tells you exactly which replacement units you can use. And they send you the kit to replace it yourself. So instead of a fuzzy-sounded transmitter for $100, spend a $150 and get an all new unit that does everything you want. Just something to consider.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 10:23 AM) http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_rja6_w.html Awesome, thanks - I didn't find that in my searches.
  14. QUOTE (hogan873 @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 10:41 AM) Who wouldn't want to see a trade for Gonzalez? In reality I see a re-signing of Thome, and I'd be okay with that. The poll question is what you think is LIKELY TO OCCUR. Not necessarily the same as what you WANT, which would be a silly poll, since basically everyone would want A-Gon.
  15. Balta, if you are reading this thread... I may need to work with the mission down there on a disaster readiness plan. I had previously been concerned mostly with hurricanes, and hadn't even realized that the area was seismically active. Do you know where I might find a seismic risk map for Haiti? Or a faulting map, something like that, that shows me what kind of danger the area might be in for quakes? Thanks.
  16. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 13, 2010 -> 10:07 AM) From what's coming out today, it looks pretty damn bad. Yeah, looks like a true disaster down there. I got some good news about the area where the mission I worked at previously is. The nearest city, Jeremie, reported only minor, sporatic damage, and no casualties. So most likely, the village mission, which is up the mountain a bit from Jeremie, is fine. But Port Au Prince looks catastrophic.
  17. Choose your weapon. Note the poll is what you think is LIKELY TO OCCUR, not what you WANT to occur.
  18. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 08:09 PM) It certainly looks like a very strong possibility. Current 25-man roster locks: Bullpen: Jenks, Putz, Thornton, Linebrink, Williams, Pena (6 pitchers) Rotation: Peavy, Buehrle, Floyd, Danks, Freddy (5 pitchers) Starting position players: AJ, Paulie, Beckham, Alexei, Teahen, Pierre, Rios, Quentin (8 position players) Bench: Castro - C, Vizquel - MIF, Kotsay - OF/1B, Jones OF (4 position players) In total that's 23 spots already taken. One of those is going to go to a secondary backup IF, so really there's just one spot left. We either take 12 pitchers or we add a DH, and it shouldn't surprise anyone if we go with 7 pitchers in the bullpen. We're certaintly thinking very hard about that at the very least with the claim on Dolsi and the adding of Santos to the 40-man. I think the bolded is not only not a given, but is unlikely. I think 7 bullpen arms is nearly guaranteed, with Ozzie managing (though I'd be happy with 6 myself). The other slot is more likely to be part of the DH platoon.
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 08:24 PM) It kind of looks like the shock itself wasn't as bad over there... at least I hope. Keep us up to date if you hear anything. Working on it. I actually spent a couple weeks down there in 2007, when I was between jobs, volunteering. I delayed my start with the new company, and went and did that. It was a great experience. Great people. Hopefully everyone is OK - they probably are, this area is on a mountain top, a bit inland. But if I get any inside tidbits, I'll post them.
  20. Oh god. My wife's uncle runs a mission at a church outside Jeremie, which is on that SW penninsula.
  21. QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:13 PM) I agree with Mike, and I unfortunately fell victim to this. I was working on a short sale and basically had issues from day 1. There are many obstacles along the way before sale is complete. Two months into the process, I get word that the seller's bank is accepting my short sale offer....and then a day later, the sellers decide to file for bankruptcy, killing my deal. All the time and energy I had put into this house, and then it just goes away like that. Over the next few weeks, I checked out more places, and just fell in love with this one house in Westchester. Saw it on a Thursday, put in an offer that Saturday, and had a signed contract by Sunday. The buying process between the two houses were like night and day. That's a good point, the short sales and bank-owned properties will be dicey. And there are more of those now. I'd still imagine that for properties NOT in that position, sellers won't be adding contigencies often. More likely to be the buyers.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:03 PM) IMO, Hudson probably starts at AAA. Could be. Santeliz is a long shot, but the other four, could be any two of those. Hard to say.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) Don't forget Freddy Dolsi. I'd say I'm pretty sure Ozzie sticks with a 7 man pen. If he was going with a 7 man pen in most of 2005, he'll keep that up. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) What about Hudson? Last two slots open, I figure fall to two of: Nunez, Dolsi, Hudson, Williams, Santeliz.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 02:48 PM) If that is the case, he is a solid claim, because he can be stashed away at Charlotte for at least two more years. Yes, that makes sense, and that's the likely scenario. Charlotte OF of Danks-De Aza-Gartrell (Kroeger DH and backup OF), for those who'd care. We're pretty sure of a 7 man pen, right? Jenks-Thornton-Putz-Linebrink-Pena-LOOGY/Williams-Nunez/???.
  25. OK, De Aza was claimed off waivers. Doesn't that mean he needs to make the 25 man roster, or he can elect free agency? Rotoworld also expressed skepticism that he'd even stick with the Sox all offseason:
