And I don't really want to hear you guys whine and cry about it anymore either. Looks like we're both s*** out of luck.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 02:45 PM) The phrase I'm reading is that the team putting the waiver claim on them "assumes the balance of the contract". I think it's the $26.5 million, if that's what's still on there. I think you're on crack, but hey, my guess is we'll find out soon enough.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) That's different, that's a trade...the exact distribution of the dollars there is going to be specified by the conditions of the trade. Same with the ARod/Rangers deferred money. Claiming someone on waivers is going to be fundamentally different from a trade. In that case, the Red Sox were agreeing to keep some of the money on their books. Balta, a claim on waivers is a trade. You still agree to conditions, just as in a trade. The only difference is that if you claim a player on waivers, you would assume the remaining money left on that contract. It does not stand to reason, however, that you would assume money owed from previous years of employment with another team. That's a huge leap you're making. If indeed you are correct, that the claim would expose the White Sox to $26.5 (of the total $45 million) million in liability from the contract Manny signed with the Dodgers in 09'. And again, if that is the case, then no one will claim him on waivers, and so it's simply a moot point.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 01:26 PM) The money in Manram's contract isn't tied to performance, I'm certain of that. You claim him, that's the last $ the Dodgers pay him and everything else on there is taken by you, unless they pull him back. I don't agree with you. The Dodgers traded for Manny when he was still under contract from the Red Sox. The Red Sox contract is paying him deferred money until 2026. Are you telling me when they traded him to the Dodgers, all those deferred payments became the liability of the Dodgers? No chance.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 01:19 PM) If the Sox picked up Manny on waivers, I think the Sox assume every liability on that contract from that point forwards. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure I'm not. No, they absolutely would. But I don't know if the deferred compensation is attributed or tied to actual performance by Manny or not for the purposes of a trade. Because if it is not, the waiver claim would actually be like assuming $16.5 million, not $10 million. That doesn't seem right.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 01:12 PM) If they do, it's like a $10+ million 2 month rental. I am not sure about that. I am confused. Would all the deferred money be the responsibility of the White Sox? Or would it be divided pro-rata amongst the teams? Maybe Rosenthal is right...if it is pro rata, it would seem Manny would be owed about $6-7 million, 4-5 million of which would be deferred and $1-2 million paid out this season...

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 02:11 PM) Luke Scott still worries the s*** out of me. The price is going to be high and he's probably going to have a nice regression here. (which may have started in the Toronto series) Yeah, I don't like the odds of him being a huge improvement, especially if we need to give them Flowers and Mitchell.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 02:09 PM) Off-topic, but why has ESPN had golf, BMX, and tennis on all day? I want to watch some damn trade rumor coverage! I am 90% last year they had an hour long special from 2-3 PM to cover until the end of the trade deadline. This is crap, I want to see some talk.... MLB Network
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) If you allow us to factor in the odds that the guy won't make it to the plate in the postseason due to injury...yeah. I would totally allow that.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 01:06 PM) I'd rather have Luke Scott than Manny, looking forward. Again, you want Luke Scott up there in the Postseason rather than Manny?

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 01:51 PM) I don't get the demand for a lefty power bat. I mean, it would be helpful, but at the same time, just get a good power hitter and I think we'll be fine. In 2005, we really didn't have a great lefty thumper and we were able to win. I'm not saying this is '05, but I don't see the great dire need for the bat to be a lefty. Our OPS against RH from a DH could actually be over .800.....but against lefties it is .650ish? That is where the demand comes from...
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 01:41 PM) Our left handed production in general has basically been the worst in the AL as the Mariners recently passed us in LHB OPS and that's with Vizquel playing out of his mind, Teahen should help some but how much? There is no defending it, to be honest. But I am not a fan of trading Viciedo away to correct that. Will I understand it if we do trade Viciedo in order to get Dunn? Yes. But I will not be happy about it. I think when we get to the Postseason, and the weather is cooler, and we face more lefty starters, we'll be fine.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 01:32 PM) Yes he is. Look at Cantu's numbers since the beginning of the year. Over his last 46 games, he's done this... His July splits? .241/.268/.291 His June splits? .245/.303/.378
-
I could live with it as is. I'd like to get a bat, but I don't want to trade Viciedo for a rental. We've got lefties covered pretty well from a DH standpoint...it's just the DH against righties we've got to worry about...and that is a weakness, but I don't think it's the end of the world. In my opinion, we could definitely win with this roster.
-
QUOTE (b-Rye @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 12:26 PM) Mark Kotsay sucks, do something. Any other 1st place team would cut Kotsay, even as a bench player. I can't think of any team in baseball that would start him regular. The Rangers traded for Jorge Cantu...did you notice that?
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 12:18 PM) I dunno. That's a lot of money to pick up for a 1 month rental when we can't even crack 30K on a Friday night in July when we're in 1st place. You don't necessarily have to claim him on waivers. If he clears, you can negotiate with them just like we are right now.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 12:17 PM) But at the end of the day I don't think we have the roster to overtake NY or Tampa in the post season. No one has the roster, or will ever have the roster this year, to overtake NY on talent. It's a 5 or 7 game series. Anything can happen.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 12:15 PM) well there's also August and 1:45 left today. I know people block waivers, but a lot of good players also get through. Oh I agree....I'm just trying to brace them for nothing more happening today I'd bet anyone $ that the man in dreadlocks is on this team by the end of August.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 12:06 PM) The Sox should have never been in the position they're in today. When they went with the DH by committee, they said that if it didn't work, they could then acquire someone at the deadline. The thing is, hearing everything about KW makes it seem like he knows more than anyone that he needs to find another bat. I understand Fathom. But you see what is going on now. You guys are acting like two spoiled kids crying to their parents..."but YOU said we could go to the circus today!" They made a mistake. It's over. You move forward. Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do right now considering how crazy Rizzo is acting.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 12:59 PM) Agreed, at the end of the day, being close to deals doesn't mean anything. He needs to get something done, or him and Ozzie deserve even more heat for their decisions during this last offseason. Man, you and J4L are almost impossible right now....you guys are just unfair. Yes, we should have signed Thome. But that's over with. I don't know what you want out of Kenny right now. These rentals aren't worth what teams are asking for and yet you insist that we land one of these rentals.
-
QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 12:55 PM) Gammons on MLB Network flat out, I think the chances are good that he could be traded in August. It just makes much more sense for them to wait, unless they are given a very good prospect to encourage them to trade him today.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 12:49 PM) Disagree on the Cowley bashing. He does a damn good job covering the team. No one is bashing him. Just saying I happen to know for a fact that he has been purely guessing as much as the rest of us here over the past 36 hours.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 11:46 AM) He publicly questioned Rizzo and his tactics. There was no need to air that in my opinion. He did?
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 11:38 AM) How motivated is Manny going to be if he has to go back to the Dodgers knowing they tried to trade him? My guess the Dodgers know they have to deal him for this reason. Sox or Rays. They didn't try to trade him. They were approached about trading him, they asked him if he would be amenable to it, and he said yes.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 11:38 AM) Cowley says Manny deal is pretty much dead. Cowley is purely guessing at this point.
