I know this was a joke (sort of) but I actually think the Sox and Cubs are going to make a move. Odds say it's for a RP or two, but maybe something bigger happens.

But I think they matchup quite well in terms of needs.

Only partial joke.  I want the Sox to finally be on the good end of an "eat a bad contract to get a player for less prospects" trade.  Spend some of that money uncle Jerry saved these last 5 years

  2. It's possible to be super excited about the team (which I am) AND also upset that the 85 year old cheap fuck of an owner isn't capitalizing on this once in a possibly lifetime cheap roster by spending money & hiring his fossil drinking buddy to coach (which I am)

The choice shouldn't have been: trust a young guy or sign a shaky veteran that will likely fail.  It should have been: offer blank checks out to the top free agents that fill the couple real holes on the roster & use those young guys as depth (which we are extremely lacking on).

  3. It's not really about "did they spend what they were trying to spend on Machado".

Its: "the window is wide f'in open right now"...and they're rolling with no right fielder, a rookie DH, 2 young wildcards in the rotation, all while having a cheap core.  Holes could EASILY be filled by JR parting with a couple of his coins.  Instead what I fear is this time next year we go in saying "man if we just get a right fielder, a DH, and another starter and we just might make it to the ALCS"

  4. It was almost impossible to screw this up and yet it sounds like they found a way.

In utter disbelief we're hiring a drunk senior citizen who hasn't coached in over a decade & failed in the front office to oversee the best group of young talent this franchise has ever had.  Completely and totally insane.

Nothing says "change the game" and a bunch of young exciting players than Tony Fucking Larussa.

Still can’t believe they are playing these games in the middle of the day and for cable subscription only. Pretty infuriating to not be able to watch my team in the playoffs after 12 years of suffering.

Cycle through free trials of Youtube TV, Hulu, Sling, Fubo, etc.

See regardless of what the owners say or open the books they will not believed. People will always go to the "fake books" They could say a team made a trillion dollars and people will say "wow, if they reported a trillion it must really be 10 trillion."

However you are correct in that the fighting between the two sides will create more problems for the sport as a whole.

You keep pointing to "people won't believe it" but its not really based on beliefs.  In the Hollywood accounting examples you can see the games being played to turn things into losses on paper.  There's not really any disputing that and the same would go for baseball.  Just because its not technically an issue 'legally' in the books doesn't mean its actually losses.  Also doesn't factor in any of the sweetheart deals these teams have with cities for their stadiums.

For once the owners just have to eat it, sucks for them but that's the situation we're in.  If a team randomly stopped drawing fans they'd still have to pay all their contracts out, they couldn't just argue to cancel the season.  No difference here, there's some risk in owning a team and it happened this year.

Ultimately I just will never feel sorry for a billionaire owner losing the equivalent of a few hundred dollars to me or you its just absurd.

I've said this before, most fans won't care which side was right, who was getting screwed more, how much money each side was losing.  If the season is cancelled over money, both sides will get blamed, and rightfully so.  Right now, it seems as if they are not even considering the fans.

And in a couple years the owners & idiots running the MLB will continue to cry about how they just don't understand the mystery of why ratings/attendance are down.

So you too are of the opinion the Sox are now going to operate as one of the 3-4 lowest payrolls in the game moving forward.  K, got it.

I think a lot of people are going to be surprised when the Sox open up the pocketbook the next two years.  Will they beat everyone out for Cole?  Maybe not.  But they're not going to fill in the gaps off the clearance aisle any longer, IMO.  That's not to say they won't make minor signings, but I think they days of being a bottom 5 teams in payroll won't last very long.

So they get brownie points now just for an offer even if they know the offer is low?  That's an interesting take.

Personally, I’d rather they use it to extend Moncada and Robert than be tied up to 31/32 year old Machado and Harper for another 5-8 years.

Kenny's excuse in 5 years why they can't afford to pay Moncada is going to be funny

I wanted the Sox to sign Harper but he also appears to be fading. Can’t imagine what his and Machado’s contracts will look like in another 5 years...

An unknown, but there is a 100% guarantee the 2 or 3 washed up 33 year olds that the Harper/Manny money allows them to buy will be trash.
