  1. QUOTE (scenario @ Jan 3, 2009 -> 02:05 PM)
    So... who would we rather have? Floyd + one year of Dye... or Bailey + one year of Roberts.

    If it was Bailey and THREE years of Roberts, sure.

    The guy is apparently a physical freak and takes great care of himself, if he'd stick around for 3 years, I'd take that over Dye + Gavin.

  2. This is from the original source of the rumor -

    http://masnsports.com/2009/01/revisiting-robertsfloyd.html

    I don't mean to interrupt your preparations for the big Buffalo-Connecticut bowl game today - bonus points if you knew it was the International Bowl - but I wanted to revisit last night's entry about Brian Roberts and Gavin Floyd, now that I've sifted through all the comments.

    Again, I'm only saying that the two sides have talked about the two players. The Orioles apparently brought up Floyd's name, and it's been under discussion. That's it.

    Fans in Chicago who are railing about the absurdity of the White Sox giving up a young 17-game winner need to be reminded that the kid was 8-10 in parts of four seasons before hitting it big last season. He's not in Jake Peavy's class yet. He might never get there. The jury's still out.

    And yes, the White Sox would be punching another hole in their rotation, which is why they might pursue a free agent or require a pitcher in return for Floyd, whether it's from the Orioles in an expanded deal or a third team. It's only Jan. 3. Opening Day rosters don't have to be set for a few more months.

    Also, it figures that the White Sox would want Roberts to sign an extension, which would eliminate the argument over him being a one-year rental. Unfortunately, I left out that important point while rushing to file my entry before the Hot Stove Show on MASN (I heard Jim Hunter say "10 seconds" as I was reaching for the send button).

    As a friend and former co-worker pointed out last night during a text exchange, Olson-for-Pie didn't happen, but that doesn't mean the trade talks weren't real. Roberts-for-Floyd might fade away, too, but they've been linked in the same discussions this winter.

    As always, stay tuned.

  3. Ozzie went off and said that he doesn't believe that players can play the infield AND the outfield, and that everyone he's asked immediately said "shortstop" when he asked what his best position is.

    I think 2B this is going to be like LF last year, when CQ was Kenny's guy, and Jerry Owens was Ozzie's guy.

    This time, Lillibridge is Kenny's guy, and Getz is Ozzy's guy.

  4. Hmm, from what I've read in the past, Cuban Ball is normally compared to A+ to AA ball, and a .330 BA in AA translates to about .290 in the majors.

    That's backed up by Alexei's year, he was a career .333 hitter over there and he hit about .290 this season.

    If the guy can take a walk, I'd definitely prefer him over and lead off/CF candidates we have now.

  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 08:16 PM)
    Limited playing time against lefties.

    .225 is probably more like it. .240 maybe. I just threw numbers out there to make a point, but yes, .210 is too low.

    And again, I am not saying Kotsay would be some giant upgrade. A moderate one, if healthy.

    BA had more AB's and a higher batting average against righties last year.

  6. QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 07:40 PM)
    As the lineup is currently constructed the lineup would almost certainly be Quentin-Owens-Dye despite the adamant protests of Soxtalk.

    Man, I really hope we get a lead off hitter, I don't think I could stand any more of Jerry Owens(is there anyone with an uglier swing?).

  7. The fact is that Jon Garland has proven he can be a #4 starter in our ballpark, something Richard, Poreda, Marquez, etc.etc. haven't. If he comes for under 10 million, I say do it, you'd essentially be receiving Tyler Flowers, Brent Lillibridge, Gilmore, Rodriguez, Garland & some cash for Javy.

  8. How about Xavier Nady and George Kontos?

    Or hell, maybe we could pry Johnny Damon away and play him in LF while solving our lead-off problems.

    1. Johnny Damon - LF

    2. Lillibridge/Getz - 2b

    3. Carlos Quentin - RF

    4. Jim Thome - DH

    5. Paul Konerko - 1b

    6. Alexei Ramirez - SS

    7. A.J. Pierzynski - C

    8. Josh Fields - 3b

    9. Brian Anderson - CF

    That's actually a nice line up with a lot of upside.

    "The Mariners receive right-handed pitcher Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman Mike Carp from the Mets,

    along with outfielder Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians.

    Second baseman Luis Valbuena will go the Indians,

    who also get right-handed pitcher Joe Smith from the Mets in the deal.

    Mariners right-handed reliever Sean Green and center fielder Jeremy Reed also are going to the Mets in the trade."

  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:08 PM)
    Doesn't mean you have to settle for a likely bench player.

    They probably shopped him around and were unhappy with what they were offered, maybe they like Joyce's power potential.

    I'm just glad we won't see JD traded for him.

    "9:32 p.m. — Source: Tigers to aqcuire Edwin Jackson

    The Detroit Tigers are set to acquire right-hander Edwin Jackson from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Matt Joyce, according to a major-league source.

    Tampa Bay, with David Price on the way, had a surplus of starting pitching. Jackson, 25, was 14-11 this year with a 4.25 ERA.

    In exchange the Rays get a 24-year-old, left-handed-hitting corner outfielder who hit 12 homers in 242 at-bats. -- Ed Price"

  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 08:56 PM)
    If they could duplicate their minor league numbers, I could probably take either Lillibridge or Getz at leadoff, because both of them have moderate speed but that wonderful ability to draw a walk.

    Plus Lilly is great on D

  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 11:16 PM)
    I wonder if we'll see Flowers as a DH in Chicago in 2010, before we see him as a catcher replacing AJ?

    Obviously, he has 5X more value if he can catch at least "adequately," so you'd hope they wouldn't rush him, but Viciedo, Flowers and possibly Fields would be the best internal candidates to replace Thome in 2010.

    Not sure, I just hope they don't rush him.

  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 10:40 PM)
    I don't get it either. They're close to signing Ibanez also.

    Take it from some one from Seattle, Ibanez in RF will be the most hilarious thing baseball has seen. He makes Rob Mackowiak look like a defensive wizard in the OF.
