Pederson should be hitting his prime years. If the cost to acquire him is accurate, it's hard to argue with the trade. But it's still hard for me to believe.

    Β

If he busts out, they can get a lot more for him than they gave up.

Still gotta hit the ball, but I really like what our stadium potentially does for his power numbers too.Β Β

It's hard to believe they can't get more for a 2-3 WAR player playing for $5 million. It boggles my mind. Bummer is decent, but c'mon. Fulmer? 80% of this board wanted him DFA'd last year, and some thought he was going to be a 40 man roster causality this winter. Laz is pretty good, but his huge numbers drop off a lot when he plays in more age appropriate leagues. He's already 24. Not much time to become a legit prospect.Β

Is it just me or has LA inquired about Fulmer in the past?Β  Keep getting this feeling like he's been on their radar.Β Β

  3. Guys...we’re freaking out about eyeballs...do we know how crazy that sounds?! Β And they’ve been so overused at this point...people are just using them to get a rise out of people because for some reason it works?! Β There’s never a time when White Sox baseball fans’ eyeballs should out-trend LASIK. Β Β  The ratio is now 900 eyeballs to 1 legit piece of info.Β  And yet we still freak out as if it means something! Β 900:1. Β We’re getting close to Tim Anderson’s K/BB ratio and only we have the power to stop it.Β  Β Time to get back to real-world reality. Β Let scrolling breaking news banners be the new eyeballsβ€”when something is ACTUALLY HAPPENING! Β Β Β

Ha!Β  True...I have noticed that they always seem to come in low.Β  How a lineup with Manny, JimenezΒ and Jay would be calculate lower WAR than a lineup with Davidson, Engle and DelmonicoΒ I'll never know.Β  Those would be the 3 most notable changes.Β

What exactly are the "intelligent" questions they should be asking??

Let people ask what they wanna ask. Β Maybe some tidbit of real info might slip through.

No way.Β  They have met, planned, rehearsed every team representative on what to say.Β  They know it's coming and they have their talk tracks all set.Β  The Machado-related questions are already getting old before the first one is officially asked.Β  There will be a groan at the FIRST question asked because really at that point the QA session will derail to nothing useful.Β  Case in point, the Jon Jay press conference...the guy got annoyed at the FIRST question with a Machado-like flavor.Β  Like bmags said...the trap is set.Β  The ones who will be trapped will be the ones who ASK, not the FO guys...they are trained to diffuse the public through calculated answers that will sound informative but say absolutely nothing.Β Β

What should we ask instead?Β  Not sure!Β  Maybe things like "hey, has Moncada figured out how to hit right-handed yet?"Β  Ask them a question they haven't prepared an EXACT beat around the bush answer to.Β  Unless you don't mind not getting your question answered!Β Β

  6. In all honesty, the dumbest SoxFest questions to ask would be Machado-related questions because they are not going to be truly answered.Β  AND EVERYONE knows this.Β  However...you watch...the only questions people will try to ask will be Machado-related...assuming THEY are actually going to get worthwhile info from our FO guys.Β  They'll bring their accounts of these encounters back here and discuss how the questions were just given a blanket, planned response and how they really didn't say anything.Β

Whether or not Machado played ss or 3b with us; timmy should be taking more of a , β€œwhatever to help the team” attitude in front of the media.

I mean yes...that's the "right" thing to say...but you know...I'm kind of ready for the wrong thing to be said if it's the RIGHT thing to say--it's RIGHT if it's true.Β  Come out and fight for your job.Β  The FIGHT is what we've been missing for a long time.Β  Wet noodle blanket statements of "whatever I need to do to help the team" do nothing in building the right culture.Β  Come in to camp, fight for your position with a World Class athlete and WIN it outright...THEN do whatever you can to help the team with your ACTIONS not words.Β  I think this is what Tim is doing!

  8. Call me crazy, but I think Tim Anderson has a shot at becoming a star.Β  He's kind of become written off because he didn't light the world on fire his first year, but I'm telling you...kid's got talent, edge and the will to win.Β  I actually love that he believes he's just as worthy at being the SS as Machado.Β  It shows that he believes in himself and his abilities.Β  My hope is that Tim Anderson is our "caged animal" and busts out soon!!!Β Β

Right, I think the variation in the names thrown out as being involved and how unrealistic that is has made this an impossible conversation.

I like Joc Pederson, and am not ready to punt on 2020 the way many are. However, the idea that he can be had for Bummer and Bush seems incredible considering better positioned teams with equal farms such as braves also exist.

But, that is the info that was presented to date. Apparently, there is no salary offsetting any talent sent LAs way.

I would love to upgrade over Engel, but not at the price of hurting our future goal of consistent contention. Unfortunately at this point, it feels like the talent we amassed in trades of 2016-17 is what it is, it is not being re enforced well in draft and there has been no fast risers from the latam classes of 2015-16, and no class to speak of for 2017-18. None of the minor trades to date have resulted in an immediate turnaround for a prospect.

So trading for the depth at this point is a scary proposition as it feels removing the margin for error. When you just absolutely need specifically Luis Robert and Jimenez and Dunning and Kopech and Cease to hit. Is that likely? History says no considering the major league record of our recent good prospects at least shows significant major league work required. And for that reason bush feels like one of the pieces that could catapault into a future core piece. Is it likely? No.

Now there are pieces I'd trade for young productive players even if it isn't cost controlled for 4 years or more. Rutherford is one, Hansen is another. Burdi is another. And pederson is a guy that would be really nice in a mix of 4 good outfielders. Say a combo of Eloy, Robert, and say Luis Gonzalez, then using a platoon with pederson for LHP with Gonzalez (obviously this could be wrong but I don't know what to make of the fact that Gonzalez absolutely destroyed LHP despite being a LH batter), then you are talking about the kind of depth that competes with Astros, yankees and red sox. And I thought that was the goal, not to take a weak division for a year like the 2017Β minnesota twins.

I know it sucks to watch garbage. And I don't like the idea of just continuously pushing out the window of contention. But this team is still 90% garbage on the ML roster. Adding machado helps. It doesn't change a lot of it. Adding pederson will be nice. I don't think it moves us past, say, 80 wins even with both and significant jumps from moncada and good jimenez.

I could get on board with this.Β  The thought would be if they make a decent jump in 2019 through bigΒ FA adds and internal growth, that they will add more before 2020 crunch time--possibly giving them a push down the 2020 contending path.Β  Like another stud SP, more bullpen specialists, another couple bat upgrades.Β  I think if that all happens, you'll see the competitive team shell starting to form.Β  One that might be clear enough that they can begin considering moving prospect assets to help the MLB cause.Β Β

Tell me when are we contending again? I just want to get this down for future reference.

HA!Β  Well...it's my understanding that they would prefer to contend at some point in the near future--next couple of years for sure!Β  Otherwise...I'm not sure they would be going after guys like Machado if it wasn't the goal to contend soon.Β  Judging by the timeline of things--if I had to guess, the plan would be to play well this year, and contend next year?Β  Just sayin, I don't think Engel will have a spot on those contending teams when they arrive.Β  Do you?Β Β

You’re still not getting it. Nobody has an issue with your speed data. It just doesn’t tell the complete story about the players.

Where you run into problems is when you disregard the fact that when you play a good defensive CF who is one of the worst offensive players in MLB, you’re costing your team wins. People are simply saying that Joc’s offensive production andΒ CF shortcomings far outweighs Engel’s defensive production and offensive shortcomings. And it’s not even close.Β

Last, Joc is fine in CF. He’s not a top of the league CF by any means andΒ he doesn’t need to be.Β You can deal with that given his very good offensive production. Engel is a good CF. But remember, his offensive production is so badΒ it literally wipes out anything he does for the team defensively. He’s costing the team wins, especially when comparing him to Joc. There’s literally no arguing that point.Β

This is all correct.Β  I love great defense as much as anyone, and I love watching Engel go get em in the outfield.Β  But when you are contending, you need players who are both.Β  And if you have players who aren't both, then they have to be able to hit more than anything.Β  I'm not sure Joc Pederson is the answer, but he's a massive improvement over Engel.Β  Honestly, I will cherish my 2018 Topps Adam Engel baseball card of him going over the wall to snag a HR away, but he is no where near our roster when we start to compete.Β  I doubt he would make many MLB rosters--the opportunity was with us during the rebuild and mostly because he got hot in the Arizona Fall League a couple years ago.Β  I honestly think, if that doesn't happen, we don't give him the extended look in CF--even with the immense amount of skill he brings to that position defensively.Β  The hope was that he would come around and show a little of that AFL spark at the plate, and it just hasn't panned out.Β

Omar Vizquel changed everything for that type of player.Β  NO ONE thought he would be able to hit at the MLB level but you had to give the guy a shot because of his glove.Β  Then something clicked and he found an amazing niche offensively and boom...you have a tremendous asset.Β  You have to give guys like Engel a look to see if that could happen--but unfortunately...it didn't.Β  There aren't many Omar Vizquel's out there.Β  True lightning in a bottle.Β Β

  12. Anyone think our supposedΒ offer would increase if we knew of an actual team who has outbid us?Β  If true, think it's a perfectly priced offer that no one else seems to have beaten.Β  I'm starting to think it's the current market value for Manny Machado (plus a little room to bump up if there's actually another team willing to beat it).Β Β

I think it matters a lot. Not for the few thousand fans that are there. For the media coverage. It's the most media coverage the team will get in the entire off-season.

Unless they sign Machado.Β  If that happens, they won't need a convention to get the reporters out.Β  It will be a national news break and will call on the same local reporters who were at SoxFest to report the signing at that time.Β  Manny signing with the White Sox is bigger (to more people) than SoxFest, so anyone (who matters) covering SoxFest will cover that story if/when it happens.Β Β

I never understood the narrative that Sox Fest matters in any way at all. It's a group of a few thousand DIE HARD sox fans, many that probably post on this board along with kids/families. Those fans are going to be there regardless unless JR really drives this franchise into the ground. The event already sold their ticket packages and is a minimal revenue driver. Adding Machado doesn't add any revenue.. so what incentive at all does the FO have to sign anybody beforehand?

    Β

They just need to get the deal done before the season to get their marketing tuned up and ready to sell season ticket packages.

    Β

Harper and Manny likely have their destinations pretty well figured by now, but obviously the deals aren't blowing anybody away so no rush to sign them. MIght as well wait it out.

I agree.Β  While it would be a nice publicity opportunity, I doubt a team is going to risk rushing the largest asset acquisition in team history so they can save face in a question/answer session at Sox Fest.Β  If you think about it like this:Β  what's it going to take to get Manny to sign now?Β  Oh I don't know...reports of the offer are at least 75 million dollars lower than he's looking for.Β  So...do the Sox press the panic button and shell out an additional 75 million dollars simply to "get it done before Sox Fest?!"Β  Uhhhhh....no.Β  I really don't think we would want our FO to do something like that just so WE could feel better about the whole thing as we browse through the new 2019 Sox gear selections...or stand in line for a Yolmer signature...

If I'm Rick Hahn, I go ahead and field questions/frustrations from fans for an hour to keep from rushing that move!Β Β

    GUYS! I've solved the video..

It is NOT Jon Jay in the video 100% (still can't be sure it's Manny). BUT this person is holding a bat, hard to see, in his LEFT hand.Β  Any batter that holds a bat will hold it in the hand that is on the bottom of the bat.Β  A right handed hitter (Manny) will hold it in his left.Β  A left handed hitter (Jay) would hold it in his right.. AND BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!

No no...it’s Machado’s dad in the video. Β Plain as day! Β

I still think there is a whole bunch of stuff that can be explained by people using offer, formal offer, etc interchangeably when there is no defined meaning to any of them anyway.Β

Maybe the yanks never offered him but discussed numbers all the same. Who knows. Would explain a lot of the "so and so offered" // " NO they didn't" back and forth.

Absolutely.Β  Always thought this was in play.Β  People's interpretations of technicalities/terminologies.Β  Sooner or later the need for a tweet became larger than a person's willingness to stick to their rule about only posting correctly termed details.Β  It became mush quickly.Β Β

I have watched Sox baseball since the mid 50's. NOTHING, concerning the Sox or MLB has been as weird as yesterday. So much "leaks", "rumors" "fighting" and whatever between the agent, "sources", and so called sports reporters! Really hard to believe they sunk this low.Β

I think this will not be resolved soon. We could get to 1,000 pages here before anything is resolved.

I hope we get Machado. A lot of these same "leakers" and/or tweeters that are belittling Machado's character IMHO probably are for teams that will not be getting him. I have heard a couple people that supposedly know Machado that have a different take: They think Machado is the kind of player you hate if he is playing against you, but love if he is on your team. Sound familiar? Like a guy named "AJ"? I will take a 26 year old superstar that plays like AJ did any day.Β

Shoot...I'd take AJ himself at this point...
