Colon to Marlins?

From the Trib:

Expos on hold: Don't be surprised if Bartolo Colon winds up going to Florida for Brad Penny, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and a young pitcher like Blaine Neal. Montreal GM Omar Minaya couldn't build up the market he had hoped for Colon or Javier Vazquez at the winter meetings.

Now the Yankees and Red Sox have turned their attention to Cuban defector Jose Contreras, who was declared a free agent last week.

"This changes everything," a Yankees official said. "We're going to be in this thing big. Our people think this guy might be the best of the pitchers we've been considering."

Boston is considered the favorite to sign Contreras, but it would be foolish to write off the Yankees, who have until Jan. 8 to re-sign Roger Clemens.

The Marlins might seem a surprising destination for Colon, but owner Jeffrey Loria believes his team can compete with the downsized Braves. If he were wrong, he would deal Colon again at midseason.

Well if Colon goes to the Marlins, look for the marlins to move him. That move just wouldn't make sense. It would be a real good move by the Expos.

I think this is just the Expos trying to make it look like their is still a market.

Maybe, just maybe, we can luck up and get one of those two at a good rate.

I admit I don't know much about the latest Cuban defector, but the track record for Cuban pitchers ain't all that good. I mean you got El Duque and his half brother Livan but after that what? Am I missing somebody? Anybody remember Rene Ochoa and some of the other so called Cuban phenoms?

Only thing is, when the Orioles played Cubs in an exhibition game a couple years ago, he pitched 8 shutout innings, giving up 2 hits. That's pretty damn good if you ask me. I don't think El Duque or Livan could do that on a good day.

It'd be worth the risk, if you had the money. The White Sox do not, so don't even worry about Contreras until we have to face him.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported an NL source said the Marlins had an offer in place -- possibly for Expos starter Bartolo Colon -- that was effectively scuttled by the four-way trade between the Blue Jays, A's, Diamondbacks and Reds. The newspaper's source indicated that was because the Jays dealt shortstop Felipe Lopez to the Reds instead of saving him for the Expos, who then would have been able to deal Orlando Cabrera, thus saving about $4 million he's due to earn through arbitration. Sources indicated the Marlins aren't interested in Cabrera but remained focused on Colon once it became clear that was the player the Expos preferred to move. ...

Goddamn...don't let him go to the frickin Marlins...that pisses the hell out of me.

I'd rather do the package that got us Vidro and Barret along with Colon then do nothing....and I'm sure the Expos would rather do that deal than trade Colon for Penny straight up, because they still have to do more moves after it.

Guys, I'm sorry to do this....but if I were KW, I'd talk to JR and say if you want to win so much, then let's do it. Now or never. Don't trade the entire farm system, but give them the Garland, Liefer/ Lee, and what not for Colon, Vidro and Barret....if we suck this year, then we trade away all of it...Thomas, Konerko, Koch...the whole lot that makes more than $5 million(excluding Buehrle and Maggs, assuming Buehrle will make more than $5 million next year)....but if we did that, I got a feeling we wouldn't lose. We'd overmatch the Twins in every facet of the game....starting rotation(1-2 anyways, and Wright, Rauch and Biddle are decent), bullpen and hitting....I'm pretty sure we'd win the division and could be a World Series threat if we got another starter at the break....a 1-2-3 of Buehrle, Colon and say maybe Brian Lawrence, and we'd be in real good shape....especially if KW could get Montreal to take Wright over Garland....regardless, Wright is a good #4 starter and when he has his 'A' game, he is near unhittable. When he doesn't, you'll get a strained neck watching balls leave the park.

Now or never should be the team motto this year....because if we don't, I say we sell the big money guys(aside from Maggs and Buehrle) and let the young guns play....or in other words, rebuild.

JR's gonna do that (White Flag 2 or 3..... whatever the hell flag we're on) anyway so why will he take on Colon's contract when he'll get the same results (the Sox not going to the WS) anyway? :huh

Well, after that I can't really think of any other defectors that got much money. Contreras is supposed to of been Cuba's best pitcher and it would definately be worth it, but the Sox aren't talking to him.

You understand what I'm saying right? We trade for Colon, Vidro and Barret, and then if we succeed, we resign them, with the exception of maybe Barret, and we basically reap the benefits from there. If we won the pennant or even the World Series this year, we would reap from the benefits. We would become the team in Chicago again, our share prices would go up, attendance would increase....etc, etc etc. Then with all the money and what not coming in, JR could put about $10 million towards the renovations that will make the park look like it did from the picture on that website....you couldn't say anything bad about Comiskey Park or the Chicago White Sox organization anymore...period. We'd still have the farm system and we'd have a great major league team as well....we could form a dynasty....just say that and hear the nice ring it has...the Chicago White Sox dynasty....sounds nice, doesn't it? If the dynasty started, we could have a payroll of around $75 million within 2 years of its creation.

But if it fails and the team is out of contention and doesn't make the playoffs, that's when White Flag part 3 or 4 or what not falls upon us....we rebuild and start over...the earliest we would start competing again would be 2005, but most likely around 2006 or 2007.

That's what I'm saying....now or never. Let's do it

I know what you're saying. However, JR has no commitment to winning. I'm sure it comes as no surprise to you, but White Sox fans have been saying what you're saying for years. And what would happen if Comiskey Park was packed for every game in 2003? Think back to what happened when Comiskey Park was packed for almost every game in 1993. That's right..... JR didn't lift a finger then when attendance wasn't an issue. We needed another starter to solidify the rotation for the playoffs and JR goes out and gets one of the lesser SP's available in Belcher who SUCKED once he put on a White Sox uniform. Attendance is only an issue now because JR pays it so much lip service..... making it out like it's our fault he won't go out and sign a Clemens, Maddux, or Colon. JR is just a cheap prick..... PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!!! All filling the park up will do is put money in his cheap ass pockets! f*** JR!!!!! :****
