Think there is anyway though, Nomar is a FA next season, and with Jose 1 year option, any way we make a run at him next year??? I whould be speechless if we got Nomar, he is my favorite player in the league. That would be awesome to get him. I just don't see the Angels doing this deal, unless they got him signed to an extension. The deal would clearly be about money aswell. The poor state of baseball economics.

While I don't think ANY player is worth over 20M+/yr, I think you can make the arguement that ARod is the best player in the game and if there was one player to that deserves that much money it would be ARod. I don't think you can blame Texas losing solely on ARod's contract, they still spend as much as the Sox excluding ARod, which tells me that their managements doesn't spend their money well to surround ARod(although his contract does prohibit them to some degree). His average season over the past 3 years has been .306/52/132 15 SB(80% sucess rate) 1.010 OPS GG defense(he has made 18 errors....the last 2 years combined with above average range). These numbers from a position like SS(opposed to LF for Bonds) to go with the defense makes him arguable the best single player in the game. I want to start off by saying that I think this is a bad trade for Boston. Sooner or later they will realize that pitching wins championships, and that improving the best offense in the game won't take Boston over the hump. The 10-15M that they would add with ARod could be better spent getting a top of the rotation starter and/or top of the line closer. Furthermore, they will have 45M tied up in 2 players. They were literally giving Manny away.....what happens when they pay 5M more for a better player? This deal really doesn't make sense for any of the teams involved(except Texas). Boston is wasting what little financial flexibility that they have on improving the offense instead of the pitching. Anaheim is getting a SS for maybe one year unless they are willing to commit about 15-20% of their payroll to Nomar. Texas would get the best out of this deal. They would pick up some pitching while giving themselves financial flexibility to fill other holes.

For starters, A-Rod's production is inflated by a) the park , b.) line-up protection that included Palmeiro, Everett, Blalock, Gonzalez, Texeira and Pudge and c) playing mostly in low-pressure situations with his team being dead last.......Meanwhile, Bonds has shown he will do it anywhere, anytime, with Galarraga hitting behind him if needed. As far as defense and baserunning go, Bonds is more than respectable. The problem with a SS position is the wear'n'tear; at 28, A-Rod is arguably as good as Bonds. But will he be in 5 years, let alone 10? But I do concede that along with Pedro (playoff importance) and aformentioned Bonds, A-Rod is one of the players who truly deserves big bucks. Well, maybe Pudge too if only he could duplicate his playoff production in the regular season, which he only done once in his career in 2000. Just 2 years before Rod signed, Belle was making 11 Mill and Frank was making 10 with half of it deferred. Even if he didn't lose alot of money on the deal, Hick's 250 million generosity largely contributed to ridiculous escalation of salaries.....Anyway, I think you're making a mistake by using White Sox as a model for comparison. We are and almost always have been mediocre, Texas should be spending more on non-A-Rod players. But I digress. Baseball is a unique game in that the impact of any given player, possibly excluding The Babe, is LOWER than it is in any OTHER team sport, especially basketball. (Again, with the exception of playoffs where Unit or Pedro can give their team a 3-0 headstart in a 7-hame series). Hell, if Texas GM plays his cards right, they could get Orlando Cabrera, Ponson, Batista, Livan and Anderson for 26 mill. They'd win at least 12-15 more games that way.
