Giants sign SS Willy Adames — 7-years, $182M

I agree that I wouldn’t pay Adames that much money.  However, I think you are underestimating MLB free agency money…

Francisco Lindor was #3 in fWAR last year among all MLB shortstops, just above Adames, and he signed with the Mets in 2021 for 10-years and $341 million.

That’s almost twice as much total money as what Adames just signed for.  This Adames contract looks like a steal compared to that deal.

Yeah, it’s probably market value. The Giants, and especially the Mets, can sign whoever they want at the market price.  But I still think it’s too high and not the best use of resources for most teams.

I like that Orioles’ signing of Tyler O’Neill. They have him for 3 years on similar terms that the Sox have Benintendi for 3  years.

Well, they don't have a quality fielding SS to anchor the infield...assuming the scouting on Montgomery holds.

Will be interesting to see what HaSeong Kim gets in free agency coming off shoulder surgery but a 6 fWAR two seasons ago.

Presuming Crochet is gone they don’t have a solid anything to anchor anything

"The ebullient 29-year-old has clubbed 112 home runs since the start of 2022, tied with Corey Seager for the most by a shortstop over that span.

Whoever wrote this is very very bad at math

Even that deal is a bit shady.  Better cuz it’s only 3 years but take a look at O’Neill’s “consistency” or lack thereof over the past few years.  I think his deal and Benintendi’s deal will both look bad by the end of next season.

What would be the point of signing a free agent like this right now?

and further to the point. why should most of the 30 mlb teams ever take on mega money contracts when they have little chance to sustain a competitive position with the big spenders ?  All the big money agents know the handful of GMs who will be worth their time.

Because all 30 teams make bank from their local revenues combined with MLB profit sharing.  They can all afford these contracts.  They just don’t sign them because they would rather collect ever more profits, just like Jerry and many other owners.  It has nothing to do with winning or losing.
