Ke'Bryan Hayes signed a $70 million extension that didn't age well.

Counting Scenes already haha?

Hayes is just under Grandal/Benintendi...right there with Luis Robert Jr. who just came 1/4" from two consecutive walks in SF.

LuBob just made a jumping attempt that would undoubtedly have put him on the Sox DL for 4-6 weeks.

Griffin, Reynolds, and Mitch Keller.

I used to say JR was running the Sox like they were the Pittsburgh Pirates. I guess I was giving Jerry too much credit.

Now they only need to get Skenes.

But the tallest of tall tasks.

It doesn’t appear that anything is done or agreed to yet but it seems the two sides aren’t too far apart. Olney’s report frames Pittsburgh as hoping to get something done that is comparable to Corbin Carroll‘s $111MM eight-year deal with Arizona while Griffin’s camp is targeting Roman Anthony‘s $130MM eight-year pact with Boston. Given that the gap is less than $20MM, perhaps something can get done. A couple of weeks ago, Jon Heyman of The New York Post suggested the Pirates could be willing to get to the $110MM range. Last week, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the two sides had indeed discussed an eight-year deal worth $110MM.

The name that keeps coming to my mind when watching Griffin is a young Mike Trout. He’s big, athletic and makes everything on a baseball diamond look easy. Yes, they play different positions, but there’s something in the way he carries himself that leads me there. Bobby Witt Jr. is the closest comparison at his position.

The new deal will give both sides security, as Griffin will make an average of $15.6 million over the length of the deal, and has security through his arbitration years and his first two potential years of free agency. He’ll be 28 and likely still in his prime when he’ll be eligible for free agency now. Yes, he’s giving up some potential short-term earning power, but it also protects him if his career goes sideways.

For the Pirates, it locks up a player most feel is a can’t-miss star. The franchise selected Griffin with the No. 9 pick in the 2024 MLB draft out of Jackson Preparatory School in Flowood, Miss. He signed for $6.53 million but didn’t make his professional debut until 2025. Pittsburgh has already invested heavily in Griffin, so this new deal isn’t a surprise. It will keep him with the franchise through the 2035 season.

...

Griffin is an outstanding athlete at 6’3” and 221 pounds, who possesses tons of power, elite speed, and an arm that plays all over the diamond. He shouldn’t be this good this young, but he is. A true unicorn prospect. It won’t be long before Pittsburgh has him locked into the lineup.

Now he’ll be in the majors and locked in with the Pirates for a long time.

"A good fortune for me is that Jackson Prep (Griffin's school in MS) has a production company that streams their sporting events. It's not cheap ($100 for a season), but now I have access to the on-demand video for all of Griffin's home games in 2024. The video quality could be better, but shortly, I'll be putting together video highlights of the critical plays. Together, we can figure out if Griffin is worth the risk of taking fifth overall. "

Here are my notes from my first look at Griffin in game action...

"One concern for Griffin is contact. He didn't show much in showcase games last summer because of a shoulder injury. Scouts attending Griffin's games make it a focal point of what to watch when following him this spring. In the past, I would have to lean on these scouting reports to help shape my opinion of a particular prep prospect."

Guessing the White Sox didn't shell out the $100 here.

The Cleveland Guardians, who have the No. 1 pick and sent a team of EIGHT scouts to watch you back in March, are said to be mightily interested. Most, if not all, Major League teams are. After all, back in February, when Prep was preparing for its first game of the season, 52 professional scouts surrounded the batting cage to watch you hit. Fifty-two. There are only 30 Major League teams. Do the math.

So, tell me. Are you nervous? Are you sleeping well? Are you sleeping at all? I know I wouldn’t be.

Here’s what the real Konnor Griffin, one of the most mature and polite teens you can ever imagine, said earlier this week when asked that question: “I am sleeping just fine. This has been a lot of years in the making and represents a lot of hard work. It’s just a great opportunity I have ahead of me whether it’s to go to LSU or go somewhere and play pro ball. I have no clue, but I am ready to find out. I’m ready to go.”

Kenny Williams Jr. and Sox scouting supervisor Warren Hughes were the ones who scouted Tim Anderson out of Mississippi fwiw.

"Warren Hughes has been a scout for the Chicago White Sox starting in 1987, signing Tim Anderson, Tim Elko (Ole Miss), Michael Johnson, Ray Liotta, Jared Mitchell (LSU), Konnor Pilkington and Ehren Wassermann. Hughes played for the Australian national team in the 1982 Amateur World Series. He went to the US for college.

Also the only one to scout Chad Bradford...

Looks like Hughes and Mike Shirley really missed on Jacob Gonzalez as well as Konnor Griffin. They did get Grant Taylor at least out of LSU.

Don't read the second paragraph if you don't want to be physically ill lol.
