January 28, 200422 yr Hey guys, I don't know how many of you have been out to Tucson for spring training, but I am trying to plan a trip out there over my spring break. Do any of you guys know the best way to get out there, places to stay, and any possible player hangouts in Tucson? Thanks for any help.
January 28, 200422 yr Sure. I would fly ATA to Phoenix and then rent a car there. I don't know if you'll get a cheaper or faster flight directly into Tucson. As for places to stay, take a look at www.visittucson.org or try the Holiday Inn Palo Verde near the ballpark, or if you want to go budget, there are a couple of Super 8's in town which are clean, comfortable, and inexpensive. I have seen Sox players in a great bar called Maloney's, which is in the 4th Ave. entertainment area (lots of bars, shops, restaurants). It's a nice place with good drink specials and very beautiful women too. In addition, the area immeidately adjacent to the university (U of A) has a few good spots ... Gentle Ben's (brewpub), Frog and Firkin (pizza, great beer on tap, good crowd) ... it is very near 4th Ave. You can walk from one to the other. Things to do? Plenty. Old Tucson, where a lot of tv shows and movies were filmed. Aasarco Mine for a tour of a mineral mine, about 15 minutes out of town. Pima Air and Space Museum. Nimbus Brewing Co. for a great local brewery tour. Watch the White Sox prospects work out and scrimmage at the TEP fields before the games. Have some authentic Mexican food at one of the hundreds of places they have there. To get a local flavor of what's in Tucson, visit www.tucsonweekly.com . They have some good restaurant reviews on that site. We go down there for 3-4 days every year and are never lacking for things to do. If you are going to SoxFest, stop by the Tucson booth and pick up a copy of the latest tourism guide and you'll see specials on hotels too. The weather is usually in the upper 70's or low 80's by game time. Mornings and evenings are cool, bring a light jacket. It's the desert and Tucson is a higher elevation than Phoenix. Tucson is about 2400 feet. You will have a blast! Don't steal my bar stool at Maloney's though!
January 28, 200422 yr Author Wow, thanks for all that info, I was there last year with my parents for a couple days, but this year I'm going with some guys my age, so it should be a lot more fun. Thanks for all the tips though.
January 28, 200422 yr . Pima Air and Space Museum. awesome museum. There are a lot of places like sadona that aren't to far from Tucson
January 28, 200422 yr You can also make the drive down to the Phoenix area and catch games there. Their are a lot of great places to hang out around ASU, etc. Southwest or American West are a few other airlines I recommend cause they usually have great rates into the Phoenix area.
January 28, 200422 yr If you book today or tomorrow, you can get $99 or cheaper one way airfare to Phoenix from anywhere Southwest flies.
