February 13, 200422 yr A report filed by a former head of the SEC - on hire from the owners - claims that 30 NHL teams combined to lose over 270 million dollars LAST SEASON. Wouldn't surprise me at all - the salary scale for the NHL is terribly skewed in comparison to its popularity and revenue generating ability. No NHL player in the post-Wayne Gretzky era should be paid 10 million dollars or more. Of course, the NHLPA said that the report is "fundamentally flawed". This is gonna get ugly....prepare yourself for no NHL next fall....of course, SlackHawks fans have had no NHL hockey for a while now.

So sad that my favorite sport will be the first pro organization to fall victim to money and greediness.
February 13, 200422 yr I will be interested to see the #'s for next year with the appreciation of the Canadian dollar of about 15%. Last years numbers don't surprise me at all.
February 14, 200422 yr Contraction and a Salary Cap. And nuke, lets not freak out the NHL isnt going anywhere.
February 14, 200422 yr Contraction and a Salary Cap. And nuke, lets not freak out the NHL isnt going anywhere. Both of those measures you mention are absolutely necessary IMO. Expansion has diluted the talent pool so bad its like watching 20 minor leauge teams and 10 pro teams out there. Salaries are out of control and the only way to rein them in is to make a cap. However, the NHLPA wont go for either of em and its because of that we wont have hockey next season.

They probably are taking ticket revenue only and comparing it to costs. I heard they convienently leave off money from parking, TV, concessions and merchandise. If these guys were losing that much money they would not be in business. Especially a cheap prick like Dollar Bill.

They are actually I read something Friday that said the Hawks actually did make a profit, where as this survey showed them with a loss. But because of the Hawks shares of concessions and parking, and their profits from being half owners of the UC, they made a tidy profit. (Forbes Magazine) But these are the kind of things that happen where I don't believe baseball at all when they cry broke. Same with JR.
