March 23, 200422 yr This is one block over from my house. MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- A city police officer was shot today in a neighborhood and taken to a hospital, authorities said, and there were reports that at least two others were killed. Officers went to a home in a northwest neighborhood on a report that a man had stabbed a woman, television station WNDU-TV reported. When police arrived, the suspect in the stabbing barricaded himself inside the house and an officer was shot in the face, the station reported. Reporters from local news organizations said the house was burning while the man was inside. The fire was later extinguished. One of the people killed was inside the home, the other outside, Chicago television station WGN-TV reported. Residents in the neighborhood of this northern Indiana city about 30 miles east of Gary were told to stay in their homes until the situation was under control, the station reported. It was not immediately known who was killed. WNDU, quoting unidentified authorities, reported that the officer's injuries were not considered to be serious. A police officer who would not identify himself said the officer was shot about 9 a.m. EST. He would not say what hospital the officer was taken to. A SWAT team was sent to the scene and police surrounded the house, the television station reported. Police planned a news conference for noon EST.
