Honel's rehab going slowly

May 4, 2004

BALTIMORE -- Kris Honel, a New Lennox native, continues to have a slow recovery from a sore right shoulder.

Honel's only start this season came on Opening Day for Class AA Birmingham when he gave up three runs on two hits and three walks in four innings.

Honel, the Sox' first-round draft pick in 2001, pitched in a simulated game Sunday, and his fastball is some 10 mph off of the low 90s he normally throws. In three previous minor-league seasons with the Sox, Honel is 23-18 with a 2.95 ERA with 115 walks and 348 strikeouts in 3592/3 innings.

Honel, who was in major-league camp in 2002, was not with the big club this spring. The Sox said there were too many pitchers in camp for Honel to get enough quality innings.

Left-hander Ryan Wing also is dealing with a sore shoulder and isn't expected to return for at least another month. Wing, a second-round draft pick in 2001, hasn't appeared in a game all season after opening spring training in major-league camp.

In three minor-league seasons with the Sox, Wing is 22-14 with a 3.37 ERA and has 127 walks and 218 strikeouts in 2682/3 innings.

Despite their absence, Birmingham still is 12-11 in the Southern League and a half-game out of first place in the league's West Division before Monday's games.

I'm surprised the Sox told the reporter about his radar gun readings.... I would think that would be kept internally.

I figured the same Rex. Still, Idon't see it as too big of a deal, usually you'd be pretty off considering you haven't pitched in a bit and your coming back from a sore arm.

Im not worried... both guys are young, better to just let them get healthy, than have another Rauch or Barcelo.

It's New Lenox, not New Lennox. Pathetic Sun Times doesn't even know towns within the Chicago area. Honel should be fine, but it's hard not to be worried when he is supposed to only miss 1 start, then 2, then who knows.

That is where he went to HS, but he is from my home town of Bourbonnais.

There ya go, another mistake. I just knew he went to Providence Catholic which is in New Lenox.
