I don't think people realize what great speed can do on the pads over 155 games if there is a brain behind it.

 

OPS is important, but in case of exceptional guys like Rickey Henderson or even Robbie Alomar, a .400 Slugging can be as "valuable" as 550-600 Slugging for guys like Edgar Martinez.

 

They create runs in many ways that can't even be measured.

 

Think about it: Willie scored the run. Soriano let alone Ronnie Belliard wouldn't have. Willie "created" a run - not much different than hitting a HR with 2 outs. If you start thinking about baseball in those terms, comparing Harris to Soriano, this season anyway, is not THAT crazy.

Soriano ain't all he's been cracked up to be. That was partially the influence of the New York/Bristol media hype. Ala Jeter. Soriano is a good hitter, but he's not such a great baseball player. Willie, on the other hand, is a damn good all around baseball player that is not ever going to be the same type of hitter as Soriano. But then, Willie has different strengths which he is learning to utilize to increase his overall effectiveness.

 

It isn't all about home runs. A good lead off hitter is like gold in this league. Especially for this particular team. Willie is the ignition for our high powered offense. With Willie's defensive ability and versatility, I say he's more valuable to the Sox than Soriano would be.
