In perhaps the worst season of Chuck Tanner's five years as manager, the team staggered most of the year and finally finished 75-86, fifth in the west, 22.5 games behind. Jorge Orta was the most consistent performer, batting .304 with 11 homers and 83 RBI's. Deron Johnson, released by Boston, was signed in spring training and provided some power with 19 homers and 75 RBI's despite a .239 average as Bill Melton slumped to .240 with only 15 homers and 70 RBI's. Johnson was sold back to Boston in September. Stan Bahnsen left even sooner, being traded to Oakland after a 4-6 start. Jim Kaat was 20-14 in 41 starts and Wilbur Wood 16-20 in 43. Rich Gossage(9-8) had a 1.84 ERA and 26 Saves in 62 games. On Dec. 16 John Allyn, who lost some 2.5 million in 1975, sold 80 percent of the team to former owner Bill Veeck, who fired tanner the next day and made six trades in 2 days after the sale.

Was that when they made the "brilliant" move of trading Gossage to the Yankees?

Ahem.... The Sox didn't trade Goose to the Yanks. Goose was traded to Pittsburgh with Terry Forster for "The Polish Price" Richie Zisk

Correct. So along with Names on the uniforms, ladies day and Disco Demolition, Veeck also invented the "rent-a-player".

YUP! I read once that Veeck did that cause he tought players played harder in there contract year

Disco Demolition

I wish I had been at that game (which would have entailed being alive back them). Veeck was crazy!

Nothing that ever causes your team to forfeit a game should be considered "fun." ;)

I do recall that me and every other 12-year old male in Chicago thought that WLUP spokesmodel who co-hosted the event with Dhal was about the hotest thing going.

How nuts would we all go now if something happened at the statium and we had to forfeit a game because of it?
