A disappointing year for the Sox after a good start the team slumped and was inconsistent for the most of the season, but managed to finish second (81-81) 13.5 games behind Minnesota. Magglio Ordoñez led the way hitting .320 with 38 homers and 135 RBI’s. Paul Konerko (.304) was solid adding 27 homers and 104 RBI’s. Frank Thomas came back from injury and after a slow start ended up hitting .252 with 28 homers and 92 RBI’s. Kenny Lofton (.259) signed as a free agent in the off-season started off hot but cooled off and eventually was traded to the Giants. Second baseman Ray Durham (.299) was traded at the deadline as well. Jose Valentin (.249) had another good power season hitting 25 homers but was moved around the infield once again, Leftfielder Carlos Lee (.264) hit 26 homers. Joe Crede came up in the second half and hit .280 smacking 12 homers and 35 RBI’s in 200 at bats. Mark Buherle was once again the star on the Mound going 19-12 and leading the team in ERA with a 3.58. Dan Wright Followed in wins with a 14-12 record and led the team in strikeouts with 136. Jon Garland was 12-12 and Todd Ritchie who was acquired in an off season deal failed miserably with 5-15 record and a 6.36 ERA.
