Is Valdez a grinder?

Featured Replies

Baseball Prospectus projects Valdez to be a utility man. However his numbers warrant a serious look during september call ups. He makes contact, sprays the ball to all fields. Supposedly he is a plus bunter according to scouting reports. Sounds exactly like what Willie Harris is supposed to do at this level. His revival came under Guillens watch. His Arm is a plus and his defense is good. Why not bring this guy up to give us more of that grinder approach that we keep hearing about. I would like him to take more pitches and walk more, but you cant falter a guy who makes contact. Especially after this series debacle. What do you think?

18 bb in 416 ab doesn't look too great, but the rest look pretty good. I hope he can develope some patience at the plate.

He supposed to be very, very good defensively, but this is the first year he's hit really well like he has, and like Yasny said, he doesn't draw many walks.

I'd give him a couple of games when Jose needs a day off, or when we clinch the division. :headbang Then I'd give him a shot in spring training and see what happens. This strikes me as a classic career year, but maybe I'm wrong and it's a sign of future greatness.
