Great Falls Gets Back on Track

White Sox Go 4-2

After splitting their first 4 games of the week, the Great Falls White Sox won the last 2 to improve to 4-2 on the week, 19-13 overall. The Sox are in 1st place in the Pioneer League’s Northern Division for the 3rd week in a row, 3 games ahead of 2nd place Helena. With only 6 games left on the schedule, Great Falls is hoping to not falter and make the playoffs.

Tom Collaro, who’s been a major surprise, led the White Sox’ offense for the 3rd week in a row. The 6-foot-4 Collaro hit .538 with 2 HR’s and 7 RBI. The 21-year-old outfielder also managed to score 7 runs, and hit a pair of triples on the week. Both of his HR’s and all 7 RBI came in one monster game against the Provo Angels, who have the best record in the Pioneer League.

Another playing with an outstanding week was outfielder David Cook. Cook, a 9th round draft choice in 2003 out of Miami University (OH), went 10-24 (.417) on the week. Like Collaro, the 5-foot-11 outfielder also hit 2 HR’s and had 7 RBI on the week. Another player with a solid week was Chris Kelly, who hit .297 in 27 at-bats this week to go along with a HR and 4 RBI.

The starting pitchers combined to have a 4.21 ERA on the week; Not as good as they have been, but not too bad. Their K/BB ratio wasn’t very good, though, with 24 strikeouts compared to 17 walks.

The best start of the week came from Ray Liotta, who has been Great Falls’ most consistent pitcher all year. The 2nd round draft pick this year, went 7 IP, giving up 2 runs (2 ER) on 2 hits. The 6-foot-3 southpaw also struck out 7, while walking 4.

Many relievers were used this week, so no one got too much action. The best single-game outings came from Gerron McGary and Jay Marshall. McGary, a 22-year-old lefty, went 3 IP, while giving up 1 hit, 0 runs, and recording 4 strikeouts. Marshall, who was a starter in Bristol earlier this year, also pitched 3 scoreless innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out 5.
