December 4, 200421 yr I honestly think this one depends on the translation. There's a newish (5 years ago?) translation out by Seamus Haney--and it is amazing. I read a bad translation, but then came to the Seamus one and it blew me away.... IMHO, that is the easiest to read and most entertaining translation and because of that, it misses the mark. Beowulf was meant as an oral history at most, or at least as an oral performance. As soon as it is put down on paper, it loses it's meaning and power. The verse was written not for grammatic or literary purposes, but to aid in the memorization.
December 4, 200421 yr Joseph Heller's Catch 22 maybe not the worst, but the most overrated. i can't get past page 100 and i've tried 3 times.
