How would Cora improve the Sox defensively?

Maybe Cora is as good as Harris defensively, but definitely not better.  I highly doubt that Cora has more range than Harris does...

Also, someone else said it, Cora can't hit lefties either.  What do we do when a lefty takes the bump?  Don't get me wrong, I think Cora would be a nice pickup, but we'd still be stuck in a hole vs. left handed pitchers, at second base.

I'm going by Cora's tag of having played "gold glove defense". By all accounts, he and Izturis formed one of the best DP combos in the NL if not all of baseball. Uribe was better than Harris at 2B. I remember a guy from Baseball prospectus comparing 2b men in both leagues and Uribe was right up there stat wise, not just the basics, including turning DP's, fielding % of balls hits, etc. Harris was in the middle of the pack. Cora's experience will help Uribe handle the fulltime duties at SS as well. I remember when Harris and Uribe were up the middle how many times they failed to keep the runners close

Cora can handle the bat, SH, bunting, a patient vet hitter, who won't k, and can put the ball in play. Harris went in streaks where he was completely overmatched out there. I'm pretty sure his splits vs LHP weren't terrible. Not great but not horrible.

Is Cora a possibility? Has he been talked about by Kenny or any of the Sox brass?

Are we putting too much stock into the brotherhood aspect?

I think Cora would be a great signing, but, is is this all just speculation?

If ESPN1000 and WBBM radio are any indication, they've both reported the Sox are interested in Cora and possibly Eckstein.

Thanks Jim.

I would classify that as good news.

WSCR as well

the score is also reporting Cora's agent is boras. maybe now we can sign a Borass client.

i would not be surprised at all if we sign alex cora

We need a middle infielder that we can count on to hit lefties. Cora has rarely played against lhp during his career. I would have no problem with Cora being our 2nd baseman, with Willie out of the picture. However, having Cora be Willie's back-up makes no sense.

Oh my goodness... :D :D :D

That post made me realize how fantastic this signing could be.

Any scenario that has Willie riding the pine is fine by me.

We need an infielder that is strong against lefties. If a good lefty comes to town than both of our middle infielders bats might as well be useless. Although Uribe is a righty, he is simply not good against lefties. I think he hits something like over 40 points lower against lefties. So if a tough lefty comes to town that we are minus two bats from the infielders and minus of course our gaping whole at catcher. So to reiterate, we need someone who can hit lefties in our middle infield!

Cora is a bizarro offensive player:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=6023

The guy has a .371 OBP one season, then a .280 OBP the next, and then .364 in 2004!

He takes walks, then he doesn't take walks, then he takes walks again.

If the Sox could sign the 2002 or 2004 versions of Cora, great. But the 2001 and 2003 versions are horrid.

I'm not sure I've seen a stat line like that (it could be due to moving him to 8th in the lineup to get a lot of free passes). It's just flat out weird.
