WASHINGTON - U.S. President George W. Bush is expected to tell Congress he needs $80 billion US more for the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

That would make the total provided to the Defence Department for those wars, and other efforts in the war on terrorism, more than $280 billion.

In comparison, the total cost of the Vietnam War was $623 billion, translated into 2005 dollars.

In 2002, Bush administration officials mocked then-economic adviser Lawrence Lindsey for suggesting a war in Iraq could cost $100 billion to $200 billion.

Congress has also provided $25 billion to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan – $21 billion of it for Iraq.

Bush's request will come as Congress prepares budget estimates for the coming year.

On Tuesday, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected total federal shortfalls over the next decade of $855 billion, down from the $2.3-trillion deficit the office estimated last September.

The deficit estimates don't include the costs of the war.

The bulk of the new money would go to the army, which has borne the brunt of the fighting in Iraq.

Some of the cash would also go toward building a U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, which is expected to cost $1.5 billion.

Good thing all the terrorists are in Iraq, we found all the WMD, and the Iraqi people will kiss our toes for generations
