Had he played catcher all this time he'd barely be able to walk let alone run to 1st base.

Remember, Konerko also had a short stint a few years back where the Sox tried him out at 3rd base. It didn't last long, but it wasn't a bad idea. The big reason he didn't catch was because he wasn't a great defensive catcher.

 

He also had a type of disease, forget which that weakened him or I remember reading that way back when he was with the Dodgers (may not be a disease, but it was something). Of course the main reason was the Dodgers had Mike Piazza ahead of him, plus they didn't want a guy that could swing the bat like Konerko stuck behind the plate because typically it shortens your career.

 

So unless you project to be plus defensively, there is a decent shot they'll move you. But if you ever wonder why Konerko has such a good arm for a 1st baseman, its because he caught and also did a little 3rd base.
