Firefighters often have part-time jobs for the days they aren't at their firehouses.

It's no different for Kenneth Wood. But his arrangement when he isn't serving as a Schaumburg Fire Department battalion chief is a little more unusual and lucrative than the typical carpentry or plumbing gigs some firefighters have on the side.

The Bartlett man doubles as a senior administrator in the Illinois State Fire Marshal's office. Though officially part time, Wood made $73,700 last year as manager of the fire marshal's technical services unit plus got the use of a state car. In his suburban firefighting post, Wood gets paid $98,000 a year.

The $171,700 he draws from his two government jobs is more than what either of his bosses in Schaumburg or Springfield takes home and has become a new source of criticism for the fire marshal's office.

I think the pay is what's eating at people, not the fact that he has a second job.

It'd be okay if he had a paper route for a 2nd gig, right?

If he can do both jobs to his employers' satisfaction, I think it's OK.

when i go home i should start more fires to make this guy earn his money :P
