Net Gains

By CP

The NHL will examine three prototypes of bigger nets at next week's GMs meeting in Detroit. A look at them (standard net is six feet wide and four feet tall): Buffalo Sabres prototype: Sabres owner Thomas Golisano challenged his staff to think about ways to improve the game. So managing partner Larry Quinn, GM Darcy Regier and head coach Lindy Ruff came up with a net that's 13% larger than the standard net.

The Sabres concept sees the goalposts and crossbar pushed out and curved, giving it an oval look.

NHL prototype No. 1: Similar to Buffalo's, but the crossbar remains straight across instead of being curved, keeping the traditional top corners intact. The net overall is 17% bigger than the standard.

"Buffalo's net ovals out and ovals up," Colin Campbell, the NHL's director of hockey operations, explained yesterday. "Their model looks nice. We changed it a bit, we ovalled it out, put the posts out, but then went straight up at the top. Our crossbar is straight."

NHL prototype No. 2: Widens the base, making it "21 to 22%" bigger overall, Campbell said. It's two inches bigger all-around, but looks more traditional with straight goalposts.

Changing the net dimensions is too much for me. Throws all previous records and accomplishments out of whack. I would rather see them take a step back and curb the equipment updates a little. Like that thing on the goalie's left hand which looks like it was designed to snare a speeding pit-bull. I'm sure goalies have gotten bigger over the years, but they take up too much of the net with the new equipment. Leg pads and chest protector included.

God thats lame. The NHL is now making its sport look like one of those dumbass made for TV games. I hate this idea and think they need to get to the root of the problems- expansion. Expansion ruined the game and watered down the talent. Fixing equipment, modifiying the rink, adding a light around the puck... ALL STUPID!!! How did they used to do it in the old days? did they make rule changes every year to improve the game? The instigator rule is also stupid, ahh see what you guys are doing, you cant get me started, I've had to much time to think about this stuff...

PS, :fyou Shootouts
