Brandon McCarthy - RHP White Sox - Thanks in no small part to the White Sox having just about all of their games televised (an outstanding development that, though there are few people as good as Hawk Harrelson at sucking all the enjoyment out of a baseball game), McCarthy was one of the big stories of the March.  He had a 0.59 until struggling against the Rangers in his fifth and final start.  Sent down to the minors after it turned out that Mark Buehrle’s foot was fine, McCarthy allowed one run and struck out 10 over seven innings in his first start for Triple-A Charlotte.

McCarthy was drafted out of community college in the 17th round in 2002.  He excelled right from the start of his pro career, but he did get much attention until he led the minors with 202 strikeouts this year.  The main reason was his lack of velocity.  Despite standing 6-foot-7, McCarthy isn’t a hard thrower, usually working at 89-91 mph.  Command and an excellent curveball have turned him into one of the AL’s top pitching prospects.  His upside is still to be determined.  Since he’s just 21, there’s a chance he could add a couple of mph to his fastball.

As is, McCarthy is probably a future No. 3.  Once major leaguers become familiar with him, he’s going to have a hard time picking up strikeouts.  Maybe his command will be good enough to make him a Brad Radke-type No. 2 starter, but that’s probably a few years away from happening.  Because U.S. Cellular Field is playing as the AL’s best home run park, McCarthy doesn’t figure to be a fantasy stud anytime soon.  He’ll be worth grabbing in AL-only leagues once he’s called up, but I don’t think he’ll be too helpful, especially after the first month or two.

I didn't quite enjoy the Hawk-bashing.

I'm still not sure why every time Rotoworld sneezes on their keyboard we need to have a thread about it. Most people on here have a little toe that knows more about the minor leagues than they do.

If Brandon turns into a legit #2/3 starter, I doubt anyone here will have a problem with that. If he ends up like Brad Radke, I will be thrilled to death, as we are talking about a guy who settled for $8 mil a year last year.

But really, it seem like BMac has a lot of Mark B in him. Nothing about his pitches blows you away, but at the sametime the hitters always end up walking back to the dugout trying to figure out what just happened.

Meh. I saw a picture of B-Mac on their main page so I posted it here.
