Yes, because if you take out the 2000 season, he has underachieved with good talent for the most part.

 

IMO, we need someone with more passion for the game. Manuel has been given a fair shot and besides 2000, has really achieved nothing.

He has been a chronic underachiever who has failed in motivating key players constantly. To me is seems obvious that his style has lulled the team into a sense of complacency. You rarely see any sense of urgency or desperation with this team. Everything seems WAY to relaxed to me.

For instance, take the LA Lakers. Before they got Phil at the helm, Kobe and Shaq didn't win a damn thing. You could argue that they underachieved greatly, but it took great leadership to get them to the next level. Although the Sox will probably never reach that level of success, it is a valid argument that a good manager is needed to be successful. If you want to blame only the players, then why do we even have a manager?

Yes, but its not all Lee's fault either. Everyone makes mistakes that cost us games or runs or leads or whatever but you cannot put all the blame on the manger. Like I said, the players are taking care of business, but when they dont, the manager gets the flaque and that is not fair. When we win the players are the hero's. But, when we lose, Manuel gets beheaded with "You cant manage" or "You put White in instead of Wunsch" or "Its all your fault" and that is not right. The players play and the mangers manage!

Well, I think the NBA (and NFL for that matter) are a bit difficult to compare to MLB, but I agree with your main point.

 

Both the Los Angeles Lakers ( KG) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers underwent coaching changes in recent history -- the Lakers, as you mentioned, were taken over by Phil Jackson, and the Buccaneers were taken over by Jon Gruden.

 

Phil took over for Del Harris, and Jon Gruden took over for Tony Dungy. Both new coaches are fiery and energetic (Phil in his own unique way) and both old coaches were calm and quiet (much like Jerry Manuel).

 

As soon as both were discarded, the winning came.

 

The difference is that both Phil and Jon brought a completely different game plan to the table. With baseball, I suppose you could say there is a game plan (such as "NL style" vs. "AL style").

 

So I suppose the question is -- do the Sox need a style change?

Seriously though..... JM mishandles and abuses the BP all the time, constant f***ing tinkering, no fire or passion, and has only managed the Sox through one spectacular half of baseball (2000 pre-AllStar break).

I like Jerry Manuel and his patience and management theories, but...

 

It seems we come out of spring training every year and struggle to establish as a consistent winner. It gets a bit tiring listening to players take the blame for a bad outing that loses a game, then getting a win, but coming back with another bad outing days later for another loss. We need consistency and the final days of spring training should have everyone in a winning mindset. Why can't we do it? Do they fool around too much in the spring games and concentrate on seeing all the youngsters and not enough time zeroing in on getting that winning mentality?
