Canadians who view America as their country's closest ally has slipped to just 53 per cent, compared with 60 per cent in 2002.

More Canadians -- 73 per cent -- said their country is a "friend and ally" of the U.S., but that number was also down from 85 per cent last November.

South of the border, the same trend applies, with only 14 per cent of Americans calling Canada their country's closest ally. That figure was 18 per cent three years earlier.

60 per cent of Canadians agree that they like and admire Americans, down 13 percentage points since July, 2004.

Canadians' support for further economic integration with the U.S. also shrunk from 44 to 38 per cent in the same period.

---

when asked whether the government, "has a responsibility to protect the poor," 78 per cent of Americans and 87 per cent of Canadians agreed.

The proportion who believe caring for the elderly is a government duty was also close, with 88 per cent of Americans and 93 per cent of Canadians agreeing.

When asked whether civil rights are threatened by the war on terror, attitudes were even more in line. Forty per cent of Americans and 41 per cent of Canadians thought the expansion of police powers had been taken too far.

In the U.S., 57 per cent disagreed that a conviction for marijuana possession should lead to an automatic criminal record. In Canada, the proportion was a nearly-identical 59 per cent.

In all seriousness, I wonder how much of this has to do with the US media's protrayal of Canada as some kind of liberal-inteligensia safe haven during the election?

Might that have something to do with KWF's posts?
