May 17, 200520 yr This was brought up in chat tonight and its a really valid point. Why is it that some of our pitchers ( Duque, Contreras and Viz come to mind here ) go 0-2, 1-2 then start nibbling at the corners and end up walking the batter. This has happened a bucketful of times tonight and its happened a lot in a bunch of other games those 3 I mentioned have pitched in. Why are these guys scared to go after a hitter when they're ahead in the count?
May 17, 200520 yr El Duque had that sick slider going early in the count and he gets ahead 0-2 then suddenly he's throwing tailing sliders 2 feet off the plate and big sweeping curves off the corners. He refuses to throw anything in the strikezone with 2 strikes.
May 17, 200520 yr try to get him to chase 1-2, then mix it up after that. maybe go after him, or go out of the zone again, depending of what kind of hitter it is, how youve pitched earlier, etc.
May 17, 200520 yr El Duque really doesn't have an out pitch so he has to nibble. Hitters know the forkball is coming with Contreras. Viz I think his slider his easy to recognize.
May 17, 200520 yr QUOTE(DonkeyKongerko @ May 16, 2005 -> 09:12 PM) Viz I think his slider his easy to recognize. I wouldn't say to recognize...it's just that he throws it every damn time.
