First Knights Templar are discovered

April 10, 2006

LONDON: The first bodies of the Knights Templar, the mysterious religious order at the heart of The Da Vinci Code, have been found by archaeologists near the River Jordan in northern Israel.

British historian Tom Asbridge yesterday hailed the find as the first provable example of actual Knights Templar.

The remains were found beneath the ruined walls of Jacob's Ford, an overthrown

castle dating back to the Crusades, which had been lost for centuries.

They can be dated to the exact day -- August 29, 1179 -- that they were killed by Saladin, the feared Muslim leader who captured the fortress.

"Never before has it been possible to trace their remains to such an exact time in history,' Mr Asbridge said. "This discovery is the equivalent of the Holy Grail to archaeologists and historians. It is unparalleled."

Tombs of the Blind Dead

Ah, thanks. I'm, sadly, not as up on my 1970s Spanish zombie flicks as I should be.

Sounds like that film series focuses on the satanic/Baphomet worshipping mythos of the Templar. A cool aspect of the mythos for sure, but probably a bogus charge to get the Templar branded as heretics to get them arrested and their holdings seized on the orders of the King of France and the Pope.

Interesting. I don't know that it means much, because the exsistance of the Templars has never been doubted. Too bad one of them didn't have the complete book of Templar secrets buried with him, because the stories are just facinating to hear. Hopefully we will learn a lot from these guys.

Well, these guys in particular bit it only 60 years or so after the founding, so this was likely when they were still committed to the mandate of protecting Jeruselem pilgrims and before they had acquired the vast wealth that they would over the next 140 ore so years. So, if they had a book with them it would have been the INcomplete secrets version. :D
