Indians at Tigers Game 2 thread

It looks like Byrd was pretty impressed with his counterpart, Justin Verlander last night.

"One of the best arms on a starting pitcher that I've seen ... ever," said Byrd, who made his major-league debut in 1995. "I've been around a long time. You don't see too many starters throwing 101 miles per hour."

Zumaya could turn into our own version of Neal Cotts.

A few years back you're pretty sure he'll be in our rotation some day, but he becomes so valuable as a set-up guy, you just don't to move him from that role he's suceeding in.

The two situations are a bit different. Cotts would be in the rotation if he was suited for it, but he's not. He has two pitches that are good but not electric with less than great control. That would not cut it as a major league starter. It isn't like the bullpen is holding him back from being a rotation. That's just his peak.

Zumaya has phenomenal numbers coming up from the minors and like Cotts I don't think he has a solid third pitch although last I heard he was working with one coach on a change up. His stuff is that much better than Cotts' that he may be able to succeed as a starter in this league with just two pitches and maybe a third pitch filler. At least I think the Tigers should give him more of a look in the starting rotation than we gave to Neal.
