Red Sox trade for Eric Hinske

The Red Sox traded for slugger Eric Hinske last night, according to major league sources, a move that should immediately impact the club’s lefty-lacking offense.

The Red Sox will send a minor league player to be named later to the Blue Jays for Hinske, who has played the corner positions in both the infield and outfield.

Cash considerations are part of the deal, with the Red Sox picking up the approximately $1.4 million remaining on Hinske’s contract this year but only half, or $2.8 million, of his $5.6 million salary for the 2007 season.

Hinske was pulled from the Blue Jays’ starting lineup minutes before the start of last night’s 8-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla. No explanation was given at the time. After the game, Toronto manager John Gibbons said only that the team was working on something.

Hinske said he was aware that he had been traded, although he was unsure where he was headed.

“It’s exciting,” Hinske told reporters at Tropicana Field. “Any time you get traded, someone wants you. It’s not a negative thing.”

Hinske’s production leveled off after he earned 2002 AL Rookie of the Year honors, but he has been productive this year.

The offseason acquisitions of third baseman Troy Glaus and first baseman Lyle Overbay affected Hinske’s playing time in Toronto.

In 79 games and just 197 at-bats, he hit 12 home runs and had 29 RBI.

His batting average stands at .264, with a slugging percentage of .513 and an on-base percentage of .353.

What are the Blue Jays doing? Helping their own Division, and paying for half his salary in 2007?

The Blue Jays have always been the Red Sox and Yankees b****. Anyone remember when Toronto traded Mondesi to New York, picked up basically everything in his contract, and only got Scott Wiggins back?

I just wonder if this was an extension of the Hillenbrand situation.

Teams like to help out the Red Sox for some reason.

They are helping the Red Sox, helping them fall further from contention. Hinske sucks major ass. He is of no help to the Red Sox at all. Come on now.

I dunno, I guess I'm the only one that would take a .294/.376/.575/.951 line with 21 XBH's in 181 PAs against RHP.
