2006 = 2001

In the 2000 and 2005 seasons, the Sox received a lot from their pitching staff. Because of the great efforts of those two staffs, they suffered pitching injuries in the following season.

Contreras went on the DL in 2006, and I strongly believe he's still pitching hurt. Buehrle followed up his All-star first half with the worst stretch of his career and now is having back problems. Garcia has lost velocity from last season and has pitched very poorly all season.

I've noticed it's a trend in baseball for a team that received extraordinary efforts from their pitching staff to suffer the injury effects the following season. It happened to the Cubs in 2004 and IIRC, to Roy Halladay after his Cy Young season. There are more examples I've noticed but am too lazy to research.

Despite our current injuries and underachieving starters, I still support the decision to ride them to a World Series championship. Since World Series chances don't occur often, I'm in favor of burning out the arms of every pitcher on the staff to possibly obtain the World Series.

Perhaps this is why KW tried trading Garcia in the offseason and swaping El Duque for Vazquez. It could have worked out for 2006 had Vazquez been good, McCarthy had a starting position, and Ozzie limited the innings of Contreras and Buehrle.

Reinsdorf sure has been right for the past 25 years about wanting to give pitchers the shortest contract that he can get away with.

It doesn't allow for continuity, a la Atanta Braves, with their incredible trio of Hall of Fame pitchers, but you don't get burned either, a la Chicago Cubs.

hmmm... what has this pitching staff had? contreras went on the DL for two weeks... that's about it...

everything else could be assumed as an effect from last year, or you could say that these pitchers just regressed (we all saw this coming with freddy last year)...

eh. nice idea though...

Regression is the key.

I don't want to hear one person blame injuries if we happen to fall short. If anything is disclosed after the season concludes, I'll blame management for failing to remove whomever had the problem and inserting McCarthy. If the starter was hiding it, again, management (Guillen in particular) is around these people and should realize when something is wrong.

No excuses will be accepted from me. 2006 Chicago White Sox either win or lose on their own merit.
