I guess it would depend how much of Helton's contract they would have kept. If The Red Sox were going to grab a substantial portion, they would have been free of Lowell's contract after this year. SI.com in their rumors section has a blurb about how with Helton staying, they may be limited for extensions on guys like Holiday and such...
