CLEVELAND (AP) -- Travis Hafner and the Cleveland Indians agreed Thursday to a $57 million, four-year contract extension through the 2012 season.

Hafner, the Indians' designated hitter, was making $3.95 million this year and Cleveland had a 2008 option for a minimum $4.95 million. Under the new deal, he will receive more money next year. The new agreement includes a team option for 2013.

"Not only is Travis Hafner among the elite hitters in major league baseball today, but he will now have the opportunity to establish himself as one of the great players in the proud history of the Cleveland Indians organization," Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. "This contract is both a credit to Travis's offensive performance and a testament to who he is as a teammate, his relentless work ethic and his strong desire to help bring a championship to Cleveland."

The 30-year-old Hafner is batting .262 with 14 homers and 57 RBIs this season after hitting .308 last year with 42 homers and 117 RBIs.

What a steal. There are some real sweetheart deals being signed lately.

I can hardly wait to see his ugly @$$ hitting homer after homer vs us through 2012

If Hafner gets $14, should Hunter get less?

No, Hunter will get paid based on what Ichiro gets more so than Hafner.

Andruw Jones will have more of an effect on Hunter's next contract than any other player out there.

Teams value defense alot so I think it's possible Torii will get more.

A steal? 14mil for a DH is stupid... 14 for Buehrle and 12 for Konerko were a steal
