Old Baseball Proverb

Featured Replies

Every MLB team wins 42 games and loses 42 games. It's what you do with the other 78 that matters.

With the Sox at 42-42, I'd say that Old Baseball Proverb speaks incredibly true. Time for the White Sox to make the best of an "easy" July schedule and, more importantly, make the best of the next 78 games!!!!! :headbang

I've heard it as you win 60 and lose 60, it's what you do with the other 42 that matters

I discovered that if you add up every team's wins and compare it to every team's losses it is exactly even almost every year ;)

But the Tigers are only a threat for 42 wins this year

Almost every year????

Almost every year????

some teams could have cancelled games.

some teams could have cancelled games.

What difference would that make....

some teams could have cancelled games.

hmmmm... but that would equal out to be -1 win and -1 loss, so wouldn't it end up even still?

gotcha Iguana ;) Every game played has a winner and a loser even the forfeits.

I've heard it a few ways now.

I had heard the 60-60 one, and I have heard you win 50 and you lose 50, it's what you do in the other 62 that matter, and now I've heard 42-42.

Taken right out of Moneyball. Oakland tries to figure how much each win they get above the 42 games costs them. They want their cost per win above 42 to be cheaper than everyone else's, while still winning enough to make the playoffs.

That was a real interesting part of the book.

The only chapter that I didn't like was the one on Bill James, but thats cause I'm not a stat guy what-so-ever and hearing about every freaking edition of the books he made didn't interest me.
