May 19, 200817 yr Anyone know anything about Jason Childers? http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/C/J...-Childers.shtml Sort of surprising to me that he hasn't seen more major league time with the minor league success he's had. 3.05 minor league ERA; over 8 K/9; right around 3.0 BB/9. Yet here he is at 33 years old and only had 7 innings in the majors? One of the reasons I'm asking is that he's doing very well in Charlotte... 0.98 ERA; 18K's, 4 BBs in 18 innings pitched. A .100 BAA with almost a 2:1 GO/AO Is it possible he might get called up if we need a reliever? Edited May 20, 200817 yr by scenario

Yet here he is at 33 years old and only had 5 innings in the majors? One of the reasons I'm asking is that he's doing very well in Charlotte... 0.98 ERA; 18K's, 4 BBs in 18 innings pitched. A .100 BAA with almost a 2:1 GO/AO Is it possible he might get called up if we need a reliever? We went down this road last year with Printz. I would rather see what Adam Russell can do before we dive into the 33 year old career minor league pile.
May 19, 200817 yr I don't see any humor in referring to a career minor leaguer as "a pile". I agree that there are young guys I'd rather see but sometimes you never know. What if Childers was a given a shot and he did well. Unlikely maybe, but who knows.
May 20, 200817 yr 70.1 IP 1.41 ERA 1.05 WHIP 10.6 K/9 3.7 BB/9 0.5 HR/9 Those were the numbers of Jeff Bajenaru, who actually was 27 when he put those numbers up in AAA while only being apart of the White Sox organization. But his fastball was 89-92, his slider was mediocre, and his location was only so-so. Thus, he was hit around in his time in the majors. To me, Childers looks like he would get dominated in the majors. I'd say he's not worth a shot in the majors, not when there are livelier choices.

I agree that there are young guys I'd rather see but sometimes you never know. What if Childers was a given a shot and he did well. Unlikely maybe, but who knows. There was no humor implied in my comment. The definition of pile I was using in my description was not derogatory in nature, it was as under dictionary.com, " a large number, quantity, or amount of anything". I was using the fact that we have had a lot of older AAAA talent, such as Printz, Redding, Okha, Bucha, etc. Here is a 33 year old guy who has a sub 90 mph fastball and gets through the minors with guile and pitches to contact. And doesn't project for summer success at the Cell. Edited May 20, 200817 yr by southsideirish71
May 20, 200817 yr Author QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 19, 2008 -> 10:51 PM) Here is a 33 year old guy who has a sub 90 mph fastball and gets through the minors with guile and pitches to contact. And doesn't project for summer success at the Cell. I'm sure you're right. It just seems unusual to me that a guy with his kind of success in the minors wasn't given more of a chance than just 7 innings in the big leagues. When Bajenaru got a shot at MLB, he was bad (11.20 ERA) Childers struck out 5 guys in his 7-inning cup of major league coffee and had a 4.70 ERA. Sounds like a guy who was in serious need of a better agent to me.
