July 18, 200817 yr Charlotte @ Louisville Whisler pitching Charlotte is in 2nd place in the IL-South, 5 games behind Durham. Tonight's opponent, Louisville, is in 1st place in the IL-West Division. Birmingham @ Montgomery Poreda with the start The Barons are in 2nd place in the SOU-South, 2 games out. Montgomery is right behind them, 3.5 games out. Games Notes (pdf) Stefan Gartrell is 26-87 (.299) over his last 25 games. Myrtle Beach @ Winston-Salem Ely on the mound I find it interesting that 4 of the 6 infielders now on the W-S roster are from last year's Great Falls team... Retherford, Paiml, Persichina, and Mollenhauer. There are also four pitchers from that team: Anthony Carter, John Ely, Henry Mabee, and Wander Perez. Charleston @ Kannapolis Rice pitching Kanny has picked it up lately and is now only 3.5 games out of 1st. Wily Mota, one of the two pitchers we got from Boston for Aardsma, was released. Reliver Santo Luis is leading the team with 92 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched. Game Notes (pdf) Orem @ Great Falls Skogley pitching GF shortstop Tyler Kuhn is currently 4th in the Pioneer League in hitting with a .360 average. Outfielder Johny Celis is 7th in the league with a .330 BA. Orem is the top team in the league with a 20-9 record in the Pioneer-South. Great Falls (16-13) is in 2nd place in the Pioneer-North, two games out of first. Johnson City @ Bristol Infante pitching Bristol is in 2nd place in the App-West, 3.5 games out of first. First baseman Jorge Castillo leads the team in hitting with a .368 average. Castillo is 4th in the league in batting average. Bristol is 2nd in the league in team ERA (3.98). July 18, 200817 yr Author Here are a few interesting stats from the Baron's Game Notes... The Baron's pitching staff is first in the Southern League in ERA (3.58); shutouts (10); fewest homeruns allowed (36*), and fewest hits allowed. They have allowed the 2nd fewest walks. The starters have tossed 45 quality starts this year. Seventeen (17) times, a Baron's pitcher has thrown 6 or more shutout innings. Birmingham, as a team, has thrown out 42% of opposing base stealers (47-111), the best percentage in the league. *The 36 homeruns allowed is about 1/2 of the league average. Pretty impressive. July 19, 200817 yr Poreda pitching for the Barons and he gave up a HR to Baldelli. Allen has hit another HR for the Barons.
July 19, 200817 yr Author Yep. Brandon Allen continuing to feast on AA pitching. Hits a 3-run homerun to give the Barons a 3-1 lead in the 4th.
July 19, 200817 yr QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 19, 2008 -> 01:28 AM) Yep. Brandon Allen continuing to feast on AA pitching. And not just any old AA pitching either but some of very best with Price and now Hellickson.
July 19, 200817 yr An excellent start for Poreda. On the other end, what a terrible season for John Ely.
July 19, 200817 yr Do we have a Kenny Williams, Jr. watch going? .114 AVG / .279 OBP (fairly good for such a bad average) / .229 SLG.
July 19, 200817 yr Author QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Jul 19, 2008 -> 10:02 AM) Do we have a Kenny Williams, Jr. watch going? .114 AVG / .279 OBP (fairly good for such a bad average) / .229 SLG. And he hasn't played since June 27th.
