July 17, 200322 yr Rotoworld reported he was called up to B'ham. Anyone confirm? If so, he's WAY ahead of schedule.
July 17, 200322 yr Yeah, Honel was called up to Birmingham to take Cotts' spot in the rotation while Cotts pitched in the Futures game. After making the start, Honel was sent back down to Winston-Salem.
July 17, 200322 yr Yep, just a spot start. I'm guessing he'll see Birmingham sometime this year. Then again, they make take it slowly with him and give him a full season there. Him and Wing could be promoted at anytime, imo.
July 17, 200322 yr After reading MoneyBall, Billy Beane convinced me one should not draft high school pitchers. I hope Honel proves both of us wrong.

Keep in mind that Beane does everything based on odds. It is kinda like always playing blackjack in a casino instead of slots. Your winnings (results) will be more consistent in black jack, however sometimes you will hit the jackpot in slots. Teams that are willing to gamble a little more will go for a HS player with a huge upside, knowing that their overall odds for that player making the Majors, based on the long run, aren't as good for him as the college player.

If they don't, then you may see a lot of upward shuffling in Class A.

Rex, I already got it figure out. By the time I go on the road trip, everyone that I want to see at Winston Salem will be promoted to Birmingham and since the distances don't work (I have to be back in time to get home to California to see the Sox play the Angels) I'm gonna miss all those guys I wanted to see. Just like I missed out on seeing Reed at the all star game. Although I wouldn't be shocked if Reed gets another promotion.
