July 18, 200322 yr Gabe Alvarez Named SL Hitter of the Week By Jason Gage July 18, 2003 FutureSox.com For the third week in a row a member of the Barons was named hitter of the week. Two weeks ago Jeremy Reed won the award, and last week catcher Carlos Maldanado won it. This week Gabe Alvarez earned the honor. This is the first time that one team has earned three straight player of the week awards. Alvarez, who plays both first and third base for the Barons, hit .319 with 12 RBI and six runs scored. During that span he had five extra base hits, three of which were homeruns. Alvarez, once a top prospect of the Tigers and Padres, was signed as a free agent in 2003. He was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft. He played parts of three seasons with the Padres and Tigers. With the Barons, Alvarez is second on the team with a .316 AVG. He has 10 HR, and 52 RBI. These numbers earned Alvarez a slot in the Southern League All Star Game.
