The Lockport Township Freshman Center was put on lockdown this morning after a teacher discovered a plastic bottle that appears to have released black smoke and fumes into the air, a district spokeswoman said.

Officials are calling the object a "chemical improvised device" and said it was found in a hallway at 7:42 a.m., as students were arriving at the school, 1222 S. Jefferson St., according to Kim Brehm, the spokeswoman.

Nine students and one staff member were being treated at local hospitals for possible exposure to the unknown substance, she said.

Later, a 10:30 a.m. news conference, school officials said 14 students were seen by paramedics but would not say how many were taken to hospitals.

Principal Dennis Hicks said the school is working out the details for allowing students inside the school, which is on lockdown, go home with parents waiting for them outside. The lockdown means that all students are being kept in their classrooms and the only essential personnel are allowed to move about the building.

School officials said none of the injuries were life threatening.

One freshman student, who has asthma and did not have her inhaler with her, went to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, according to her mother.

Lockport police and firefighters were searching the building as well as the school's other campus at 1333 E. 7th St., Brehm said.

I got a call from the district this morning. sounds to me like a bad prank by some stupid kids. Luckily my daughter is over at East and not at Central. I bet whoever did it is gonna get reamed if/when caught.

Yeah, sounds like smoke bombs or something. My friend saw a ton of ambulances coming over the 9th street bridge on her way to work this morning.

Gotta love those teacher pranks . . .

Maybe they didn't allow a "Senior Cut Day?"

Just heard from wife that a bomb threat was called into Lockport Eastthis morning (Tuesday). Kids getting out again. Damn kid or kids gonna get reamed if/when ever get caught.
