Schoeneweis will be another good leftie out of the pen and can be a serviceable 5th starter, either this season or next. Glover was expendable. Hell, I forgot he was even with the big club. Even if he doesn't pan out, they didn't give up anything for him. If nothing else, it keeps him from pitching against the Sox in the future. He had the Sox's number.

He will do fine. But i prefer a Starter. He will play in long relief duty. He can be a strter for us next year like KW said...

We must release Rick White. Doing this will show that our management will not allow s*** like that happens...IMO.

already given up on THIS year and lookin for NEXT year??????? i still think this was a total waste of time.....as you said rafa we could have used the #5 instead for the remainder of THIS year.......wait and see i guess, but i dont see how this helpes us get any better this year and strengthens us for right now.......i dont give a s*** about next year right now....were doing something now and i want it to continue...... its kinda one of those wash type of trades imho............neither one is that much better than the other... the only difference is the lefty righty thing.......oh well........

I'm still searching for where someone gave up on this year. Nope...can't find it.

It's really a minor deal. Hard to get too excited about it either way. Schoeneweis certainly can't do less for the Sox than Glover did.

Hi HSC! :)

IMO, this year Scott will help us, as a LH to get LH out and long relief. And he has some experience in the playoffs. He comes for nothing(Glover was never used) and he will make 1.42 millions this year.

We need a 5th starter badly...

bob look at rafas post.. in there he quoted kw as saying " he can start next year" talking about schow.......thats where that quote from me about giving up on this year came from.... who gives a s*** about next year and what he does, what can he do for us right now that will be so outstanding to make this trade not be a waste of time........i dont see it......

hey rafa :D ........ i am like you.. want a #5......dont care about mid relief right now as we have a ton of guys sitting around on the bench for that......im more worried about gettin some insurance for the 5 spot incase something happens and someone goes down... if that does pop up were screwed for a good starter........mho

I saw the post. I just don't understand how you inferred from that that this season was being given up on, unless you somehow see giving up Glover as giving up on the season. Surely acknowledging that there is a 2004 season doesn't mean that the current one is considered lost.

You have exhibited a lot of venom about this trade. I just don't see the reason. A waste of time? Well, this is obviously a minor deal and may have been made in 30 minutes. Either way, it's not my time so I don't care, as long as he didn't tell Billy Beane he was too busy to talk about getting Zito because he was working the phone for Schoeneweis

lol well maybe that giving up on the season should have been in green for being sarcastic??? mind you i have no love fest for glover and thats not what bugs me about this trade... i would have rather had a good solid #5 in place for the remainder of this year instead.....nothing vemon about it...i just think this was a stupid move when we could have added strength in a more productive way.......

thanks Joel for the answer - something to think about -

what are Schoenweis' stats for this season thus far?

Here is the stat I like, lefties are hitting only .182 against him. I agree that it is nice to have another lefty that can take care of all those lefty hitters in KC, Minn, etc. Plus, he can spot start.

I don't think this is a bad move at all.

Here's where this trade helps for this year:

It gives Marte some rest. Some of the situations Marte has been used in (see: last nite) can now be taken by Schowenweiss.

If Marte is going to be used as closer now and again, they can't be constantly using him in the 7th inning ... his arm will fall off.

Bringing in Scho in the 6th, 7th inning will also help force the other managers hand ... they'd have to burn a pinch hitter since Scho has been so good vs. lefties this year.

This move adds quality veteran depth to the bullpen, left handed to boot. It was clearly designed for this year's situation.

Anything that might happen with Scho next year, i.e. 5th starter spot, is strictly a bonus. Glover wasn't ever going to fill that spot anyway, they tried him there last year .... didn't work.

Well put.

lol yeah i thought that would shed a bit of light to the subject......

Mike Soscia thought he was a key part of a world championship team and a good player to have ... good enough for me.

Let's at least see what he can do before judging the trade. I remember hearing a lot of people complain about the Gurrier for Marte trade. Not saying this guy will be as good as Marte, but he may not be that bad.

If KW believed that this trade improved the club even slightly, then it was "a waste of time". We may need a 5th starter, yes, but who's to say that we wopn't get that 5th starter by the end of the day?

HSC has made one very valid point that I have been waiting to see if it would ever be mentioned in any of these threads.... By getting a quality 5th starter, we do have insurance if someone goes down with an injury. I've seen several debates about whether or not we "need" one, but IMO we damn well might need one very desperately before it's all said and done.

Carrying forward on the thought that we may yet get that 5th starter before the day is done, this is from today's Greg Couch column in the Sun-Times:

Today's trade deadline is 3 p.m., and Williams said he has something else going.

If kw got a 5th starter and/or a rhp reliever, I don't know how anyone can blame him for any possible sox struggles. He is obviously dedicated in getting what this team needs and giving them the best chances of winning.

Agree with you. He is doing a great job in taking us to the Playoffs...
