MESA, Ariz. — Manager Robin Ventura's main job this spring is filling out his bullpen and finding help for the bench.

He got good looks at both on Sunday during a 7-5, 10-inning victory over the Cubs.

Zach Stewart, who has been used as a starter in the past, got to start Sunday's game after Gavin Floyd was scratched because of the possibility of rain, and Dylan Axelrod, who also has been used in the rotation, relieved.

Stewart allowed two runs in three innings and Axelrod was perfect for three innings.

"It's always in the back of my mind to make the team, but I've just got to get my work in and whatever happens happens," Stewart said. "I hear rumors there's three spots, four spots open, but for the most part what I have to do is get ready for the season."

"It could be two (relievers), but we have some guys who are pitching well and it's tough to look at them and know exactly what you're needing right now," Ventura said. "Both pitched impressively (Sunday). They have been getting stronger and better each time they go out."

I really dont' think Stewart can ever start. Maybe he can be a solid reliever but his stuff just isn't all that good. I wanted to be excited but when I've watched him, I'm very "meh".

I agree, I think he's a reliever. I'd rather have him in the pen, with Axelrod starting in AAA.

I'm going against the grain here, but I want to see Stewart as a starter. I think guys with tremendous sinkers/2-seamers like that are wasted in the bullpen. Let him develop a tertiary pitch and see what happens.

That seems to be his problem though - his development of any more than 2 pitches hasn't gone well so far. He showed flashes last year, but mostly he was disappointing. I've only seen him pitch a little in spring, but so far, looks the same to me.
