Slezak from yesterday

I remember the day I gave up on the Sox. It was June 2, when they played the Cleveland Indians at Jacobs Field. Not only did the Sox lose 5-2, the Sox played as if they expected to lose. They looked emotionally spent.

The Sox fell to six games under .500 that day, and were headed out West for six games. Inter-league play was beginning. The Sox were finished. So I thought. And so I wrote.

I've found that over the years you can't count out the Sox or Cubs until they are done playing each other. The teams tend to change emotionally after those series. The Sox have gotten boosts from beating the Cubs (as they've done in the recent years) and the Cubs have had hits from losing to the Sox. I gotta give the Cubs credit for not folding like they have in season's past. It's the kind of series that both teams know is big and it can help or hurt either team.
